Here are the Canon/Nikon/Sigma equivalents:
Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Lens 0344B002 B&H Photo Video
At USD 1000, that's more up-market than the USD 600 Canon "kit lens" I refered to in my earlier post.

That would have to be more like the L zoom you mentioned.

But a "kit lens" like OP referred to
might be offered along with a D6xx-type "mid-range" body later,
once the impending D8xx-type "professional" body has earned its keep.

I don't recall the K-x being officially sold body only.
"If you can recall the oughties, you weren't really there"?

Or was that supposed to be the sixties? I don't remember.

I've been holding on to my Tamron SP AF 24-135mm F/3.5-5.6 AD Aspherical [IF]. It's a very nice FF lens that is superior to the DA 18-135 on my K-30. (Though the DA 18-135 is, of course, wider, lighter, and WR.) The Tamron is already at f5.6 at 70mm, so it's not fast, but it does deliver excellent results.

I can't remember the sixties because I wasn't born yet My earliest memories are the Iran hostage crisis and having Jimmy Carter interrupt my cartoons...

Pentax already has a formula for an excellent A 35-105 f/3.5 macro. "All" they need to do is update that formula to a 24-105, hopefully keep it at f/3.5, HD coatings, DC motor. It doesn't seem too difficult, does it? It could go as a DFA* 24-105 f/3.5 AW DC, around $800. That would be competitive pricing.

The cheap zoom as "kit" is a relatively recent phenomenon traceable initially to the plastic AF bodies of the 1990s and definitively with the emergence of consumer-grade dSLRs.
It started much earlier.

My SMC M 2/50 I bought in 1981 was cheap, as it was "un-bundled" by the shop and probably had been delivered with a ME or MV.

In Europe, the Super Program and the A3 were bundled with the SMC A 2/50, Pentax 3.5-4.5/28-80, Takumar [Bayonet] 3.5-4.5/28-80 or the Profile 3.5-4.5/28-80, the zooms all non-SMC and manufactured in Taiwan.

Whereas the customer could bundle the Super A with either the SMC A 1.7/50, the SMC A 1.4/50, or the SMC A 3.5-4.5/28-80.
I remember there were similiar offers for the P series.

Yep e.g. P30 with Pentax-A 28-80 (non SMC).

I tend to think that existence of a non-star 24-70 f2.8 "flagship" zoom renders a DFA* 24-105 less likely. Having a star f4 standard zoom would inevitably cause confusion. People would wonder why the only standard zoom Pentax thought worthy of a star was the slower f4 zoom, rather than, as is usually the case, the f2.8 standard.

To be sure, given how fussy Pentax is about applying the star label (Pentax has higher standards for their star label than Canon does for its "L" label), I doubt we were ever going to see a DFA* 24-105. We might, of course, at some point see a non-star 24-105 f4 lens. And that would likely turn out to be a pretty good lens, just as the DA 16-85 and the DA 150-450 are pretty good lenses. It just would not be making use of the very best Pentax technology (such as aerobright coatings or top-of-the-line WR and build quality), and would therefore not qualify for the star treatment.

Your M 50/2 was probably sold as kit on a K1000, though I believe the f/2 primes were available as a factory kit on all K-mount bodies at the time.

Europe has always been a little different. I was in the market at the time and don't remember any factory bundles with zoom lenses on either of those cameras here in the U.S. That being said, camera stores almost always had zooms and power winders on their display models and cameras were often sold as a store-assembled bundle consisting of body, case, factory-kit normal lens, power winder, budget zoom, flash, and hippie strap.

Below is a snippet from a 1985 B&H photo ad...

B&H did sell the cameras other ways, but the above is what would have been a factory-sealed boxed bundle.

The Standard Zoom sure looks like a 28-105 on the road map, but the 150-450 did not show those dimensions on the road map, so we'll see. Maybe we'll see some surprise kits with a D FA 50/1.7 WR or D FA 28/2.8 WR. Rebuild or make new formulas for some of those former primes that were not optimal focal lengths for APS-C.

That is my thought as well.

I was referring to something in the L glass, sigma art, and nikkor with a constant aperture range.

OK, that would definitely not deserve the "kit lens" stigma.
