I'll second the 50-200. Can be found for a song, and will extend her range, and it's quite portable.

I like our Sigma 18-250 as well. If you have nothing to compare it to it's quite acceptable.

But with moms, it's usually all about the process.

My sister gets along well with her DA18-55mm, DA50-300mm and a shoulder bag that holds both. I wouldn't have thought she'd be up to swapping lenses frequently, but the small bag makes everything easy to access and is not a major burden to carry. The DA50-200mm is a good suggestion too! Depends on how far away stuff is that your Mom wants to photograph and how much weight/size/cost she's willing to put up with.

My vote would be the Pentax 55-300; I have one and absolutely love it. I'm going to get the HD WR one soon, to replace mine.

I have the Tammy 18-200 myself and it is a very good lens all things considered. Does well for outside shots, indoor with enough light is ok and it is only $199 bucks US. Down side is it is a heavy lens and I don't know how it would be with a camera grip as small as the K-S1. Works great for my K-30 though.

I let her use the 18-135 all day. I asked her again, would she like more range and would she be okay with changing lenses. She said she prefers not to. So, within her budget, and at prices I can get, it is the Pentax DA 18-135 or Sigma 18-250 HSM

When I need ultimate one-lens flexibility and neither weather nor available light is an issue, I reach for my DA18-250 over the 18-135 every time (not that the 18-135 has much of an edge, but sometimes the extra half-stop can make a difference in focus lock in church halls and other not-particularly-brightly-lit places; I am hoping the flash Santa brought me will mitigate that significantly).

Why Sigma over Pentax - the HSM over Screw Drive?

I can get the Sigma cheaper than the 18-135 or Pentax 18-250, and HSM is nice and quiet. She liked the nice quiet 18-135, but had it at max zoom most of the time, so I am leaning toward the 18-250 with her if I can find out the image quality on it.

Okay, I had my mom use my 60-250 all day. She loves how far it went on zooming out, but didn't like the weight or size. She asked if she could get one that pulls back (goes as wide) like my 18-135, but goes as far as my 60-250, but without changing lenses. Now I know what to get her.

Heh, I'm kind of in the same boat. I got my father a KS-1 for Christmas and he likes it just as your mother. My immediate thought was to maybe look for a cheaper DA 55-300 for him since he didn't need WR and could probably live with the plastic mount. It's great that this thread popped up as it does give me something else to think about. So please update this thread with how she likes the 18-250.

Already ordered for her. It is the 18-250 HSM Macro, and got it for 240 brand new, but it was the last one at that price. Amazon does have a bunch of them for 247 dollars as Warehouse deals.

My mom got her lens and loves it. She likes the range, how fast and silent it is, and the pictures are very good in her opinion. Of course all she ever had before was a P&S or her phone, so that is a big difference. She likes her KS-1. She took over a thousand shots on it.
