Keep DA 16-45 or Go for DA 16-85?

We've already generally agreed that the fairly new DA 16-85 is a better walking around/travel lens than the DA* 16-50. Now, I own the 16-50 and along the way, picked up a new DA 16-45 on closeout from Willoughby's in New York. I made the purchase because the sale price was only $299 and it offered me some insurance in case the SDM acted up in the 16-50.

But now, I have a question for those who have been Pentaxians long enough to have used the 16-45: Is the 16-85 good enough that I should buy one and sell off the 16-45? All of my lenses are in like-new shape, regardless of age. I don't use the 16-50 much (ditto for the 50-135) but do use the 16-45 reasonably often. It's excellent at 16mm, good but not fantastic at 45mm and has an f/4.0 constant aperture.

Yes, I've read the reviews but I'd like to hear, if possible, from anyone who has been able to work with both the 16-45 and 16-85. I currently shoot with a K-5 and K-5 II. But I wonder if the 16-45 will keep up with the resolution demands of the K-3, K-3 II and beyond. I don't think I'll be buying into the new full-frame system.

I too was tempted by the DA16-85. However, looking at many shots taken with it, there always seems to be a certain lack of crispness to the images - it is hard to pin it down, poor microcontrast or whatever. Hence I've resisted so far.

My DA16-45 is not that bad at 45mm ...

love my 16-45mm paired with a 60-250mm -- both have 67mm filters and such a kit pretty much covers everything you would want.

No, mine isn't either. It's just better at 16mm.

I owned the 16-45 a few years back. Although it's a nice dependable lens, I never really bonded with it. I ended up replacing it with the DA 17-70, which I later replaced with the DA 16-85.

I don't think you'll see a huge difference in sharpness between the lenses, particularly in the 16 to 24mm range. The Da 16-85 features better contrast, and so images from that lens will tend to look crisper, with more pop and definition. I value color and contrast even more than sharpness, so there's no question that I prefer the DA 16-85. However, YMMV.

I've never shot with the K-3, so I have no idea how either lens would perform with a 24 MP APS-C sensor. I suspect it wouldn't be that big a deal, either way. Get the 16-85 if you want the weather sealing, the greater focal range, and the superior contrast and definition. Otherwise, stick with the DA 16-45. Optically, there's not a huge difference between them, although the DA 16-85 is better.

This sounds a lot like me. Thanks. Input from anyone else is welcome.

It does really well with my K-5IIS. It is sort of surprising.
