DA 15 Ltd. Best wide angle I know. I have the HD red ring and love it, although my shoots do not make me use it a lot.

edit... yep

I did see that. However after researching many posts on the Pentax Forum regarding the DA 14 it seems that lens garners less than stellar reviews. You almost need to buy it brand new in order to return it just in case.

in that case just get an smc da15. you'll get good use out of it on the trip and you can use it for funky night shots afterwards. it's a neat little lens and definitely character filled for when you want to try something fun

Just out of curiosity, where do you find a DA 15 for 200 dollars?
Also, the Sigma 10-20mm is a great lens loved by many here.

I have the Sigma 10-20 f4 - f5.6 and have been very pleased with it. Distortion is minimal, and easily corrected in Lightroom. Used it might fit your budget. Be aware, filters aren't cheap, and of course a polarizing filter is ... problematic.

Tamron 10-24 has been more than adequate for me and is priced well. The zoom range is versatile, and it sharpens up with stopping down. It might suit your budget...

I love my DA15 but use the Sigma 10-20 3.5 more. It's versatile and makes fantastic images.

You're not really a wide angle type of shooter -> So take the lighter lens, the 15mm. You will less hesitate to take it every time and you don't regret it, a superb lens.

If the widest lens you are used to is 31mm (basically a normal on APS-C) I reckon the wideness of the DA10-17 may blow your mind.

Get the DA15 and learn its wilful ways in a Single In Challenge, then be prepared for a DA21 and 10-17 in the not-too-distant future

And you can live with improper infinity setting if you prefer LR to DXO (the latter uses the focus distance information coming with EXIF data which is screwed if the lens isn't properly adjusted to infinity setting).
At a risk of hijacking this thread :

Is DxO so stupid that it does not know that the EXIF makernote focus range index value of 7 means 'beyond infinity' ? The DA15 normally returns values of 0 to 4 for this, the difference in focus position between when 3 and 4 are returned is really very small.

In practice, don't you actually want the lens to turn past infinity for AF to work ?

Correct. It has to be able to go beyond then correct itself back to the right position.

And different temperatures cause components to change size.

I need a wide lens recommendation to finish off my stable of lenses. I'd like to keep the price at $300 or below since I'm not really a wide angle type of shooter. So I am not opposed to used
DA21 Ltd - Flickriver: kh1234567890's photos tagged with da21 - stitch if you ever need to be wider. Or the DA16-45 - Flickriver: kh1234567890's photos tagged with smcpda1645mmf40edal - if you want to keep the cost down.

The DA15 will annoy you and the DA10-17 FE is OK for the odd weird shot or two but the fishiness soon gets boring.

If manual focus is not the problem- get Samyang 14/2.8. It is magnificent piece of glass.

Ok, so the Sigma is used more than your 15?

The DA 15 will annoy me? Ok so what's going on. Is the 15 not well received by everyone?

Ebay. There is only 1 bid on it for $199. What the hell is going on with the price drop of the 15?

I have not read through all these recommendations but here's my take.

1) Pentax 15mm, never owned one, but the lens has a near cult following. For quality imaging, this lens is probably as good as a WA can be, and it is tiny.

2) Sigma 10-20mm, sometimes available used at below your price point. The original version is as good as or better than the later (fixed f3.5 aperture) version. As someone above noted, this lens is more versatile than the 15mm Pentax, at 15mm, the IQ will probably not be as good @ f4, but probably indistinguishable @ f8~11. I had this lens and loved it, but replaced it with a Sigma 8-16mm. I suspect the Tamron 10~24mm, recommended by several posters, will be on a par or nearly so with the Sigma 10~20mm.
