Pentax DA* 300 & Sigma 1.4x?

Does the Sigma 1.4x TC work with the Pentax DA* 300 F4? If so does it maintain AF?
Does anyone use this combo, if so how are the results?

I am trying to decide between the DA* 300 & the Sigma 100-300 F4.

Thanks for the help.

Brad

i donot think its can AF if you use this TC.
The SDM TC(show on roadmap)may be the best choice as its keeping the SDM function or you can ues the F1.7x TC if you want AF.

I dont know about the Sigma, I dont recall anyone every trying it. The Tamron 1.4x does, and HSM still works.

I thought DA* 300 F4 has the old screw AF system too, so it should work, no?

Well, I went ahead & ordered the DA* 300, it came today. Now I just have to find a TC that will work, I can't find the Tamron in stock anywhere but the Kenko is available....not sure what to do.
I wish Pentax would go ahead & release their TC for SDM lenses!

No, the Sigma 1.4X converter will not work with the Pentax DA* 300. It will fit, but the autofocus will not work.

Well, JB, here's my experience. Using the K20 and DA*300 and the two TCs that will allow full AF functionality: both the Tamron 1.4 and the Kenko 1.5 produce acceptable IQ images albeit poorer rhan without as would be exepcted. Low-light performance suffers too, of course, but I cannot say one TC is better than the other in this regard. Where the two differ is in AF peformance with the Tamron better that the Kenko by a fairly signifigant degree so that I rarely use that on the 300. (By performance I mean the amount of 'hunting' and ability to actually focus on the target.)
Get the Tamron, if you can find one...........

John, thanks for the detailed reply. I am trying to find the Tamron but nobody has it. Has it been discontinued?

My experience with the Kenko 1.5X is that the mount was physically loose when mounted on the lens. I could grab the lens and move it up and down slightly when it was mounted to the camera. This was with a brand new converter! I returned it and am now using the Tamron 1.4X which works great and allows SDM functionality. I would avoid the Kenko.

As best as I can tell the 1.4 is discontinued, at least in the PTX mount. Some forum members report finding them stiil in stock sometimes, somewhere..........it is probably best to watch e-bay though prices have gone up quite a bit. The model is critical; the only one that seems to work correctly is: 1.4X Pz-AF MC4 TAMRON-F AF TELE-CONVERTER.

Good luck!

yep, I went to my local dealer today to see if they could order it. It didn't even show up on his Tamron price list so he called & they said it was discontinued.
I will continue the search online, if anybody sees one please let me know ;-)
