Pentax 30mm 2.8 NOS

First a disclaimer: I have no financial or personal interest in this lens, this is just to share the information.

I have never seen a new 30mm 2.8 lens offered before, this is an unusual opportunity for someone who is a collector, plans to get a FF, or has a need for a NOS lens. It's pricey at about 3 times market price for a used lens, but if this is what you want, it's the only game in town. I have one, not new ;-) and it's a fine lens. It's worth a look for future reference. The case, BTW, is getting to be hard to find, most used lenses don't seem to have one.

Thanks for sharing. You don't see that lens on sale too often.

The FA Limited 31/1.8 is a better lens and in the same price range. I guess the seller is hoping for a devoted collector.

The K30/2.8 has the incorrect lens cap (should be the all black 52mm), so.............

At nine hundred US dollars including import fees and shipping, I think I'd be better off getting the 31 and having instant 100% full-function compatibility with all K-mount bodies (aperture ring for those that can use it; A contacts for the ones that can't; autofocus for those that have it). God bless the platform independence of the FA series!

Not "brand new" and without case & papers, but these are near the average price on PF at around $250 to $300, just in case someone really wants one:

EXC Pentax SMC 30mm F 2 8 Lens PK 5344 | eBay

Pentax SMC 30mm F2 8 K Mount Excellent from Japan 6779 | eBay

RARE Excellent SMC Pentax 30mm 1 2 8 F 2 8 K Mount from Japan E12017 | eBay

That must be a very expensive case!

-----

The same seller as up top has a 20mm SMC Pentax lens as well:

Pentax SMC 20mm F 4 Very RARE 7313 | eBay

Yes that's more what the K30/2.8 is worth and at that price I'd take one over the FA31/1.8 ($750 to $1000) any day.

According to the lettering on the beauty ring that lens is version one which came with the all black lens caps. When Pentax introduced the M lenses they also changed the naming conventions. For K lenses they continued to produce, the naming convention was standardized to match the M's and the lens caps were changed to black with white letters. It certainly possible this is a transition lens that got the new lens cap and the old beauty ring. If so it is a curiosity. There's probably no way to know from the serial number either.

Interesting. My lens serial number is 5351>>> while the one on ebay is 5356>>>, so mine was produced before the one in question. All I know is I have the same lens cap shown, nothing else. Oh, I do know it's a fantastic lens . . . . . . . . . but not worth $750.

My serial is 5352xxx and it came with the black cap.

The serial numbers really don't mean anything. They aren't sequential. It is thought they just assigned a series to a batch of lenses as needed, sometimes filling in open series with small batches of lenses. At least that was the supposition on PDML in the late 90's when a few Members attempted to interpret the serials.

It was said even Pentax doesn't have a good record of the serial number assignments.

Then we will be a step ahead of Pentax...

Mine is s/n 5345xxx and also came with the all black 52mm cap. It's the first version SMC PENTAX 1:2.8/30 in production from late 1975 to 1977.

It's possible the second version smc PENTAX 1:2.8 30mm (1977-1984) used the "M" series cap.
