You'll find it can almost be nauseatingly so...
But at close range, the 44 is smooth as butter... 44-2 in this shot.

I guess it depends on the what it's in the background and distance to background, because I was real close with that vodka bottle and it looks like The Twilight Zone.

The DA* 16-50 is pretty nice. These are from my backyard tonight.

So how do I get these images one above the other. I've never had this happen before, where the pics upload next to each other.

Not artistic, just designed to show some bokeh from DA 70 Limited (F2.4 1/50 ISO 800 with fill-in flash)

The DA* 16-50 produces nice bokeh as well. This shot at F4

Cheers, John

A50/1.7

Sigma 70-300/4-5.6 DG Macro This thing makes a dreamy bokeh.

FWIW I really see something good happening in GregK8's #2 shot and in John/jackassp's #2. Both are from the 16-50, nice.

Here's one from the DA35. It produces some fantastic bokeh, but I have a soft spot for my A50 1.7. For the $75 i spent on it, it truly is magnificent.

My walkaround long manual zoom at f4 gives nice bokeh at close distance.

Apologies if I'm repeating a link, but this seems to be a good attempt to do some pretty objective comparative testing for bokeh:

Bokeh Test

I really do believe that objective comparisons are necessary for something as elusive as bokeh, because it's so easy to get the impression of good bokeh by having a forgiving background (and distance thereof).

For instance, I can get even a Helios 44m to provide some nice soft-looking background, given the right circumstances. In fact, it's sometimes difficult to induce "bad" bokeh.

Da 55-300

DA 55-300 @ f/5.8, 1/250 sec, ISO 1600 and at full reach.

I was surprised myself.
