DA* 200m f2.8 + 1.4 teleconverter?

Hello,

I recently aquired an Da* 200mm f2.8 lens and was wondering if it is possible to use with a Pentax HD 1,4x teleconverter?
Will it affect IQ much and will it still have autofocus? I use it on a K3.

Thanks in advance

Yes is the answer to all 3 of your questions. The effect on IQ is directly related to the loss of one stop of light. I like the 200* for uses that demand a lot of light, your objectives might be different with the lens.

The loss of quality isn't that bad. It is a 280 f4 at that point. It falls short of the 300mm when used that way - in reach and in the IQ dept. it is still good however.

It does seem an interesting option... here the 200mm DA* + HD TC would cost about the same as a 300mm DA*

I find it to be a good combination for sports.

I have quite a few examples of this combination on Flickr

Here's a couple to start with.

Hope that helps.

Fred.

You might consider the FA 200/2.8 which is quite similar in design but would offer quicker AF. Oddly, the FA is slightly lighter than the DA (but not weather sealed).

I think the DA*200 and the HD 1.4X TC makes an excellent pair. Whether it "affects IQ much" can give rise to endless debates. I guess you can always find 'something' to point your fingers at, if you are a die-hard pixel peeper, but you do get a gain in spatial resolution with this TC.

Anyway, here are some more "real pictures" for you to make your own judgement (cross-posted from the DA* Club):

(The last image is a stack of multiple images. Click on images to see version 1280 pixels wide).

Regarding AF I find it very reliable on as well my K-5 as my K-3. You can even auto focus on the not-too-faint stars! And I certainly don't complain myself about AF-speed on the K-3, but others may have more demanding requirements here?

I just purchased a Tamron -F 1.4x Pz-AF MC4 and am anxiously awaiting for it to arrive in the mail next week. I bought it for my F*300, but I wonder how well it will work with my DA*200?

Please report when you find out!

My own experience with the DA* 200mm is that it has been very difficult to find a matching TC for this particular lens. My Kenko Pz AF SHQ 1.5X does not work too well with this lens. In particular AF reliability leaves much to be wanted. One of the good things about the HD Pentax 1.4X TC is that it is indeed matched to a (surprisingly large) number of identified FA, D-FA, DA* and DA lenses.

I've not read good things about this converter.

The A 1.4x-L teleconverter also matches with the DA*200/2.8 and you can say it perfectly fits with this lens. With this converter there is nearly no lost of IQ! The only bad thing is it does not support AF like the also nearly as good HD 1.4x teleconverter. Because of the high IQ with the old A 1.4x-L converter I stack it with the HD 1.4x converter so you get a very portable 5.6/390. But as always: for best results you should use a tripod.
