I've been thinking about picking up a Pentax DA L 50-200 WR, as they're cheaper than dirt in excellent used condition, and the pictures in the lens database review makes me think it's an excellent compromise between cost, size, image quality, and other factors. They're on the bay of e's for $100 or less, shipped, so it's almost a no-brainer
You aren't supposed to even consider the DA50-200 because the DA55-300 is bigger, longer and therefore better.

Well, I have an 18-135 on the way. Somebody posted one on Ebay for a decent amount less than I had been seeing. Included the lens, hood, and 5 Tiffen filters for $210 shipped.

Awesome! It is my most used lens, even with the lenses I have.

The 18-135 arrived today. I immediately put it on my K30 and took a few test shots.

It does seem to focus a bit faster than the 18-55 indoors and is really quiet. I have never used an SDM or DC lens so it was a nice surprise.

The regular screw drive lens noise doesn't bother me at all as I like to be able to hear the lens focusing. I will have to get used to it being this quiet.

I tested out the close focus distance at 18mm and even though the 18-135 is supposed to not be able to focus quite as close, even a small 4-year old's face is large enough fill the entire frame at 18mm.

Planning on going hiking in a couple weeks and I will see if I can use just that lens the whole time. I'm guessing I will at least switch to the 10-17 for a few shots, but who knows.

KH,
your photos with the 50-200 mm are very nice, and I think this lens is not so bad and sometime under rated.
