Step-up rings and Pentax lens hoods

I'm eyeing the 31mm, and I've had a chance to play with the 15mm Limited. With the 15mm, it seems like the lens hood gets in the way of my step-up ring, Has anyone used step-up rings with either the 31 or the 15? It'd be a bummer to have to buy all new filters just to use them with a new lens in the future.

GREAT question! I've been looking at the very low price of the 31 as well and was also wondering.

You will have to stack some deglassed filters or rings or use a short tube to clear the hood if you need to use larger diameter filters.

As UncleVanya said. The hood on the 31mm is fixed. However, if you have any 49mm filters, which the 15mm and all the other limiteds use, you can use a step-down ring without any vignetting on APSC. Whether this will hold true on the upcoming full-frame, I cannot say.

Ouch, I just picked up a bunch of 77mm filters, too. At least my 50-135, 43, 77 and 35 should be okay. I know the fisheye zoom doesn't have a filter thread, are there any other lenses with weird hoods?

I haven't tried it but if you put the right size empty filters on the 31 up to about the length of the hood you may get slight vignetting in the corners on Full Frame but not on APSC I would expect. Then you could use step up ring from there.

I used two ND filters & one uv protection filter on my fa31 & gives no sign of vignetting on apsc. I also put them on my DA15mm with a step up ring attached to an uv protection filter. the latter allows for using a step up ring when the internal hood is 'pushed' in. I had no issues whatsoever..

Arguably the 40mm has an "odd" hood, but it takes 49mm filters in a normal way.

On the 15mm, don't extend the integral lens hood.

Use a suitable, cheap, de-glassed filter as a 'spacer' on the front of the lens, then attach a step up ring on the front of the 'spacer'.

Attach the filter to the step up ring. (Not a polarising filter! Don't use them with UWA.)

Buy and attach a suitable lens hood to the filter

I wanted to follow up on this. I bought a 1" spacer ring from this website and it works perfectly with my 31mm.

Thanks a bunch! I just got a 31 and want an appropriate lens hood for the APSC format. The stock lens hood is pointless on a K3...
