For travel, I generally pair my DA 16-45mm with my DA* 60-250mm. The 60-250mm is the better of the two but the 16-45 can definitely "keep up" -- especially if you stop it down a bit. The other benefit is that both use 67mm filters so my kit can be as efficiently small and lightweight as possible. My only wish would be if it could be WR -- I'd be a happy camper.

Mike, with those two lenses, you've pretty much got it all covered, don't you? I'm anxious to get mine. I've already got a couple of spots in mind to try it out. My first will be some landscapes with items in the foreground.

I've had mine 9+ years and it's still going strong. Great lens, no problems.

Dewman, I'll be interested in seeing how your new Tamron 18-200 compares with the 28-200 that you have and love to use. I'm thinking the 28-200, being a full frame lens, and having a shorter range, will be optically better. But the 18-200 is newer and might have better coatings.
We'll see I guess

Those ten millimetres on the wide end are going to make ALL the difference.

Ah.... I guess I've touted my beloved "garage sale" Tamron 28-200mm lens so much that it's well know by now! You know, maybe it's just me, but I truly think that mine is an exception to the rule, as far as the reviews go. Mine is a very early production run.... ser. # 000404.... and it is EXTREMELY sharp compared to many other lenses I have. I've compared it to others identical to it and it is far and away superior to them. Recently, I ended up with another one in a CL deal... and it too is an early production run. Ser. # 000794. It too is extremely sharp! So, my contention is that the manufacturing tolerances were more closely adhered to during the early days. The second one I acquired is now in a camera case along with a white "Storm Trooper" K-x kit I keep in my car at all times. A nice little set-up with little money invested.

So, back to your main reason for the post.... comparing the "new-to-me" 18-200mm against my 28-200mm. It should be fun. In the next week, I've got a lot of stuff coming and it's going to keep my busy just putting them through their paces!

I've got coming, 1) a K-x with 18-55mm & 50-200mm lenses.... 2) a DA 35mm f:2.8 Macro Limited....3) a NIB DA 18-55mm WR... 4) a K-50 with a DA 18-250mm lens.... 5) a DA 16-45mm .... and 6) the Tamron 18-200mm lens.

I've had my 16-45mm for almost 4 years (using it with my K-5 and k-5iis) and I love the lens. Needs to be stopped down a little and then it gets sharp.
Most of the time I've used it for outdoors landscapes and inside historic houses where the wideness comes in handy....

Hmmm..... well, not exactly. When a deal comes along for basically pennies on the dollar, what's a guy to do? Sit on his thumbs?

I'm anxious for it to arrive. I've already got some areas in mind in the mountains to the south of me that will serve as subjects for some landscapes.

It is very good and definitely worth the money. Basically, good enough so the image quality will not be the reason why the shot failed. The main shortcoming is built quality.

Man, you rich people! <---- a joke!

The main reason I like my 16-45 is I start to run out of rectilinear wide angle talent/desire/money at about 16mm. And when I got my DS in 2005, all the really good Pentax users had a 16-45, because it was just out and there weren't a lot of wide angle options. So they would all take awesome shots with it because there was no DA 15/4 or whatever. It does work very well, sharper than the 18-55, good general purpose. Often people replace it with a special purpose lens that does at least one thing better (faster, more range, WR). But it's pretty good within its specs.

It's better than my 18-55, but not as good as my 12-24. Which given the cost differential of all these lenses, is about right. It'a good lens, nothing fancy.

Definitely a step up from the kit lens, but not as good as the 20-40 that I replaced it with.

I liked my 16-45mm until either the barrel wobble got worse, or the sensor megapixels caught up with it, and reduced the resolution on the edges in vertical orientation.
