I use 50mm for landscapes on occasion when I want a different field of view than the 10mm samyang or either the 18-55 or 28mm prime or 28-105mm zoom. I own the 50mm f/1.4 super takumar m42 which gives a much different rendering than any of my newer era glass.

Digital Rev has an episode giving 5 reasons to own a 50mm:

Nicely done. That's one area of processing I've not explored much. What software did you use?
Thank you, I use Hugin for my stitches.

Forget the notion of equivalence and simply go out shooting with one. The obvious in terms of working distance will be readily apparent and the rest will show itself as you review the results. At least, I would hope that would be the case.

for a 35 year period 50mm considered the standard focal length for 35mm film, which is why there are more listings of 50mm vintage primes for sale on the (E)vil-(BAY) than any other focal length. the second is probably 58mm due to teh ruski's mass producing to surplus the biotar copy known as the helios 44

also most 50mm's are based on a double gauss design known for low distortion and excellent correction of lateral chromatic aberration and coma (when stopped down in the range f4 to f8) the other most popular design was the 4 element 3 groups design known as the tessar, it has better wide open performance but could only go as wide as f2.8 and was not as popular).

on a unrelated note, canon may hold the world record for most lens manufactured of its own ef system, but i bet Krasnogorsk Mechanical Works (KMZ) have made more lenses over the same period of time full stop

I have accumulated a few 50 and 55 mm lenses through the years that came with various film cameras. I continued to use them when I made my digital switch although not as much. I bought the DA 50/1.8 because I wanted a good, AF 50 that wouldn't break the bank. I've never owned a 50/1.2 but that's one lens I think I could justify adding.
