18-135 APS Lens

I notice that Canon have announced an EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM lens for their APS cameras. Ricoh / Pentax seem to be withdrawing theirs. Personally that is the lens that I use most, as do many others. It is also regularly recommended. Who is right - Canon or Ricoh / Pentax?

?

The DA 18-135mm is a key part of the walkaround lens lineup.

?? are you sure you get it right? I have owned 18-135 lens for years and used it mostly when I want to travel light.

Regularly recommended around here as a walkaround, LoneWolf.

It is also commonly packaged as an "upgraded kit".

The only thing that might happen to the 18-135 is getting an HD upgrade.

If you are referring to the listing at Amazon as discontinued, well, that's just Amazon being Amazon.

Wasn't the "Pentax is withdrawing the 18-135" rumor based entirely on an Amazon listing and a conversation with the Pentax USA webstore? (which is an even LESS reliable source of information than Amazon, if that's possible.)

It's been nine months since the last round of this, and Amazon is STILL selling the lens directly in a different listing from the one that says it is discontinued.

Great general purpose lens! I can't see it disappearing any time soon.

In fact, with the advent of the K1, what is the FF equivalent? As regards FoV it would be a 27-200. Sadly, there is nothing on the Pentax horizon that looks anything like that. The DA 18-135 alone is a good reason for sticking with APS-C for general purpose and travel.

The FA 28-200 is closest. It is a rebadged Tamron. Just a so-so lens. I'll be putting the Tamron version on the marketplace soon

Interesting point. I had only been thinking of the current lenses.

However, I don't think the FA 28-200 is in the same league as the DA 18-135 optically. Images I've seen from it seem to lack contrast. It's a very useful FF range though.

Pentax, Sony, Nikon, Canon and Fuji each have 18-135s. AFAIK, only the Pentax and the Fuji are WR - and the Fuji is twice the price.

I think the DA 18-135 is a very good lens for the money. It's part of the package that makes Pentax such excellent value - e.g. as a quality ILC entry proposition (IS, WR, quiet AF, good optics, light weight, versatile and compact), the K-50 with 18-135 is unbeatable. And the lens is probably one of Ricoh's best sellers. Seems very unlikely that Ricoh would drop it.

Do you have a source for your claim that Ricoh is withdrawing the 18-135?

There is no source, it's a baseless rumor.

Oh, there's a base, just a false, self-contradicting one. If you search for the 18-135 on Amazon, you get three listings. The first one says it is discontinued, and only has 3rd-party sellers. The third listing is Amazon's own, in stock and ready to ship. They have the same model number - 21977. It looks like somebody marked the original 'discontinued' when they ran out of stock, and someone else typed in a new listing when they restocked.

Like I said, baseless!
