For the hobbyist, that's really all that matters. Now, if someone is paying you, that's another story (unless you are at the level where you can demand a million bucks for a picture of a potato).

I've used it when getting paid too. I usually need to fix some CA and sharpen the raws a bit but it's generally good and sharp if the shot is good enough to begin with.

How do you get a gig like that?
I have lots of potatoes that are willing to be subjects.

When I saw that article about the "potato portrait," selling for $1 million bucks, I thought it was a joke at first. But.... no.... it was for real. As Lt. Joe Kenda, the Homicide Hunter would say, "My, my, my."

This is a strange world we live in.

Well, you develop a really distinctive portrait style, so that someone with considerably more money than they need wants to collect your works at any price. I just hope a chunk of that million dollars was used to help talented artists who are just starting out, or somehow making the world a better place. (insert joke about supporting Ken Rockwell's ever-growing family)

I am going in full circle in finding a WR zoom. I currently don't have any of these zooms
  • pentax da 16-50
  • pentax da 16-85
  • pentax da 18-135

There are many discussions that favor one over the other in between 16-85 and 18-135. I personally prefer 16-85 but in terms of traveling light with minimal weight, I will go for the 18-135 instead. But it is the last thing that I want to get both or all 3. It try to minimize zoom lens to a few as in 16-50 + 50-135 OR 16-85 + 50-135. I currently own 50-135 and I am extremely happy with 50-135 though AF speed can be better.

For someone who has 50-135, does it make any sense to get 16-50 instead of the two DC versions. The intended use is more serious work as in shooting events indoor and night scene shooting on the streets that is more demanding on speed usage. For casual shooting, I think both DC can do well for me but I will favor the 18-135 for lighter weight but for consistent picture quality across the full range, I will pick the 16-85. I have not made up my mind yet. Thanks for all the valuable feedbacks. Am I right in thinking that it is more logical to pick 16-50 over the two if serious work is involved where picture quality weighs more into consideration. I am assuming buying a new copy without SDM failures.

Cheers,
Hin
