~35mm Lens for Group Photos: What Aperture?

I have an FA31 and I used it to take some photos of family. 2 or 3 people in the middle of the frame, top of the body only. which is the best aperture to use to blur the background while keeping faces and shirts sharp?

the last set i took were at F4.0 and the background was a bit too "focused" for my taste, but i don't want to go all the way down to F1.8 and have parts of the people blurred out.

thanks

well, you can just tell them to stand further away from the background...

shoot at 2.8 ? as long as they all line up you can get them all in no probs.

That's what the DOF preview button is for.
Alternatively just shoot a few at different apertures.

to answer my own question i did a quick test
AF on the middle of the ball, Av mode at 1.8, 2.8, 4.0. looks like around 2.8 would do the best job for me.

the FA31 is an incredible lens, even wide open, the picture is very good, however there is a noticeable drop in contrast and sharpness from 1.8 to 2.8. from 2.8 to 4.0, the photo looks pretty similar.

this is consistent with my own observations that the photos wide open are missing a bit of a punch. i'm going to try out another situation at the stops in between 2.0, 2.2, 2.5 and see which one would be more acceptable to me.

Put them on the other side of the street and get the good ol' 135mm out.
