This is a key part of the plan, bring a lens you can smack on in the AM and leave on all day, unless you are sure you will have a lot of time to stop and swap lenses, every family is different, only you know what you can realistically do in each day.
This thread has got me considering a rental. Maybe the 12-24mm f/4. More flexibility and less switching than the primes. But still good IQ. And a lens that I'm unlikely to buy since it's $500+ even used.

I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned the 16-85. Unless I'm shooting something really specific (distant wildlife or macro), that lens will generally stay on my camera all day when I'm traveling. It's WR too, so no worries about the rain.

Now I think the 15mm has gotten in my head. I'm having visions of beautiful starbursts over El Capitan and Half Dome. And the size will be brilliant hiking at altitude.

Once you sell the wife and kids, you know it is irrational
Otherwise no problems

Of course, the answer is always "yes". I'll probably end up renting both the 12-24 and the 15mm then trying to figure out how to eventually buy both.

You see what you just did? You put another lens into the equation. Now the sum can only be 3.

Did I originally say 21mm, too? See... that was before someone suggested 12-24. But the 12-24, good as it is, doesn't have the 15's starbursts and size. But the 21mm is cheap, you almost can't go wrong with a $225 used lens, right? Right?!

That's a good price for a used 21mm. I have rented that lens several times and like it a lot

Has anyone tempted the OP with the FA20/2.8 option? I hear the DA21 is great, but, the FA20/2.8 has pixie dust (and should have been a * lens or the like).

Half a stop faster, slightly wider and FF ...... the next problem you will face = CBA

There was a DA 12-24 that just sold for $350 used in the Pentax Marketplace. Excellent like new condition. They're out there, be patient.

In June I'll be on a family trip to both Yosemite and Tahoe. Never been either place, don't know if/when I'll ever get back, as I'm an East Coaster with elementary school aged kids.

I have both a K-3ii and a K-30, and I have these lenses: Rokinon 8mm fisheye, the 18-55 WR kit lens, 35mm plastic fantastic, and the 55-300mm non-WR version. I like all of them, and have taken some good landscapes with most of them.

But I've been thinking and dreaming and rationalizing about a wide angle prime for landscapes and light weight, small size for walking around and hiking. Either the DA 21mm f/3.2 AL, or the 15mm f/4. They both look great, but the rational part of my mind says I'll get really good results with what I have without blowing $300-500. The irrational me says who knows if you'll ever be back to Yosemite, so get some great glass to take mind-blowing pictures.

Thoughts?
You are irational, the arguments are excuse we all give to ourself. What will make or brake your pictures is not your lenses that are not good enough, but much more your photographic skills and willingness to spend the time to take great photos.

Sure that if you come back in 5-10 years and trained all that time take photos, your photo will be much better, not because of the potential new gear but because of you being a better photographer.

This is not like you could not make nice pictures with what you have...

Now you are not alone in that situation... See my signature !
