Depending on what you value in a lens, of course, but the K-mount (with full aperture control) 135/f2.0 SamYang does this for USD$486 at B&H (if resolution is a priority):

:

Bokeh is said to be quite good too. [I seem to be talking myself into buying this lens - sorry Clinton. ].

I think this chart is more telling:
How much blur? - A visual background blur calculator

It's interesting to compare the subject isolation to the 400/2.8

An interesting site. Very useful to run over one's lenses (or future lenses).

I never imagined there would be such a wide 'blur gap' between 85/1.4 and 77/1.8. And 35/1.4 is a huge disappointment.

Buy it. You are obviously interested in it. 135 f1.4 will allow some amazing images. Think of the creativity. It will be a very rare lens. If you hate it, you can sell it. If you sell it at a loss just look at it as renting the lens.

A serious question. Are any DSLR optical systems calibrated well enough to accurately manual focus this beast? Or would you have to use live view? My 77 is always sharper with live view vs viewfinder.

Would love to use this on the Q!
Thanks

Given the tenor of the conversation thus far, I also think you should buy it.

Otherwise you'll always have that nagging feeling "What if I HAD bought it?"

Not sure how viable of an option this may be, but kehoutlet on ebay has the Vivitar 135 f/1.5 for a BIN price of $1288.99 (including a Canon FD T-mount!). It's at least something of a known quality, plus you'd have almost enough left over for a K-1 - think of it as getting a similar heavy, manual focus, manual aperture lens, but with the K-1 for free!

@Clinton do you know if Mitakon would be willing to re-fit a different mount on the lens, like Sigma does? I would imagine that would increase resale value.

@clinton know you aren't interested in the Vivitar, but I was surprised to find a site that lists every known appearance of this lens. They show a pic of each lens. I find that amazing. There are so few of them!

Think how rare the Mitakon 135 1.4 in Pentax mount will be.

If even three of these lenses end up being produced in K-mount, I'll be astonished. If I had the cash, I would definitely order one. Guess I'll just have to keep searching for an A* 135 1.8 that is within my budget.

Sigma doesn't do that. It only allows mount the be exchanged if they already, currently, sell the lens in both mounts. Sigma will never fit a K-mount on any Sigma lens that isn't officially sold by Sigma as K-mount as well. And I don't know about resale value, because if someone wants to buy a Nikon, then why would they look at the used market and choose the only lens that.. isn't Nikon mount. Seems like a hassle. Maybe T-mount solution, with various adapters supplied along with the lens, but even that seems unlikely.

What you've just posted is not incompatible with what I said. I just left out the part about the necessity of Sigma already producing the lens in a supported mount, as I figured Clinton already knew that detail. So yes, Sigma does that.

If only 100 of those lenses are produced - as Clinton speculated in a previous post - and a Nikon user wants to buy the lens but it is sold out in Nikon's native mount, then having the ability to re-fit with a different camera mount expands your customer base, increasing the chance of a sale.

maxfield_photo, years ago a Pentax Rep loaned me his A*85 f1.4, A*135 f1.8 and A*300 f2.8. Enjoyed them all and had a chance to buy any or all of them. I didn't. In my defense, I also shot Olympus OM and had 100 f2, 180 f2, 350 f2.8. Unfortunately Olympus went 4/3 sensor. So that moved me further in the Pentax camp. Regret not buying the 85 & 135.
Thanks
