The last - and I mean the very last - thing I need is another prime in the same range, yet I've had a hankering for an FA 43 for years - a hankering that resurfaced when my wife asked me what I want for Christmas a few days ago.

Please explain clearly to me that I'm nuts and that I ought to put the money into some beaten down stock with a low P/E and a high dividend.

Thanks,

Why not the 77mm Ltd. Makes more sense.

Because he wants the 43.

Anything else is methadone.

Yes, but as a junkie, I can tell you the 43 will end up feeling like just more of the same that he is already shooting...

But that 77 will feel like a new 'high' altogether... 'junkie' metaphorically speaking that is

But then he's going to have to start a new thread to talk him out of that.

But yeah, you need a 77 too.

[edit -- but isn't that a little bit like telling someone to try crack when they're trying to quit heroin? ]

Of course you need psych counseling! You shoot with a Pentax. Don't you know that this camera company is:
a) going to go out of business soon. People have been saying this since 2000! It's gonna come soon man, I can just feel it! Probably the day after I hit the lotto.
b) Pentax is no good for shooting sports
c) Pentax is no good for shooting wildlife
d) Pentax has no decent telephoto lenses
e) Pentax makes girly cameras
So you are 'nuts' already. That makes it OK to get the 43! Enjoy it!

Hey - if we weren't nuts we'd go crazy!

What's with us, anyway? Something to do with living in Texas? I hope Ike treated you well . . . . as it did us.

Go for it!

If you get it and are still feeling guilty about having too many lenses in the same FL range, then sell one or more of them and get the 77.

If you want one, you need to buy it now. It may be more expensive next year.

I have ended up with a bucketful of 50 ish lenses. And still long for a 43mm.

Unless money is absolutely no object... (lucky you) Honestly, how often is each of the others lens on your camera? When you start to throw a few lenses in the bag to head out, how many of those come in the bag. For me it is usually two, the DA 40 because it can fit anywhere, and whichever is the fast 50ish lens of the month. (right now, the Helios-44M at 20 dollars is my LOM)

If I had it to do all over again (and I might with a christmas D90) I would get that FA43 first and the FA77 and the DA 35macro. Just the limiteds in the lengths I use and 2 constant ap Zooms to cover the 16-200 range... I bet it may even have cost me less in the end than the bucketful of glass and steel that collects too much dust now.

So as I tell my daughters... do as I say not as I do (it does'nt work on them either)
But I like the way you do!

Jer

With a collection that size, it's hard to comment on whether you need the lens but I'd just suggest that any advice on a future sale isn't all that great. If my wife bought me a lens (a tough thing for her to get as she doesn't really follow what I'm shooting with or what I might want), it would be a permanent addition that would never be sold
To be honest, Peter, my bride of 40 years is pretty liberal; in fact, she knows nothing about which things I attach to the camera, so - if I decide on an FA 43 - I'll order it and hand her the box for wrapping when UPS drops it off. But that's part of the ritual we've learned to enjoy over many years. Of course, this door swings both ways - so I'm always "giving" her jewelry that she's picked out.

Also, one of the reasons I still keep the M and A lenses is that most were gift from my Dad (RIP - 1995), who I still miss deeply. I just don't want to part with them, and - after a lifetime of labor - there's no financial reason for me to do so.

Thanks much for the thoughtful reply.

Jer

Used lenses are probably a good investment right now. They're expensive hobby items that people aren't buying because they're hanging onto cash and that people are trying to sell to raise cash. When the market recovers, lenses--and similar items--will probably increase in value more than the indexes.

Or, that's what I keep telling myself.

You do, you do. We all do.

Is your "screen name" (I forget the "computer" name for it, as it's currently cocktail hour) indicative of an interest in the wonderful organ of the same name?
