Good question.
Since it's a Takumar, not Auto-Takumar, it might be a 37mm lens mount for the Asahiflex cameras.

Then again, maybe not. There was the 58mm 2.2 Takumar in M42, with the slightly longer focal length (longer than the regular 55mm lenses) so the larger rear element could clear the mirror.

Was this lens an effort to go with an even faster aperture?

Oddly enough, looking closely at the photograph, I can't see 1.8 marked on the aperture ring. It seems to stop at 2. Unless it's a Photoshop fake, there's no arguing with the ID ring, though.

Looks a lot like the Takumar 58mm F2 Reviews - M42 Screwmount Normal Primes - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database
Could it be a fake front plate?

In incorrectly engraved 55/1.8 or 58/2? Probably a 58/2. The aperture ring only goes to F/2.

This page mentions them but treats them as mythical: "Base Data is from Asahi Optical Historical Club . This is of great help to start with but contains some mistakes, i.e. some lenses with no evidence that they were ever produced.(i.e a preset Takumar 1.8/58mm M42 lens) - if anybody has seen it, send me a prove!" So maybe it's something rare (experimental?)--note the very low serial number.

Also interesting serial number - 100011.
All Takumars 58/2 from Google images has serial 14****** or 15******

One would think that it is the first variant in the seven member family of 55mm F1.8 Takumars listed here:

SMC/S-M-C/Super-/Auto-/Takumar 55mm F1.8 Reviews - M42 Screwmount Normal Primes - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database

However, the aperture ring only goes to F2. Should have gone down to F1.8. Perhaps a repair job combing parts form two lenses?

the marking on the ring is just that, a marking, it doesn't necessarily mean that's where the ring stops, maybe it might may go a little past the marking.

Well if someone wants to buy it and determine its actual aperture, then report back..

I think that's a fairly good explanation.
