Some great shots there. Those headlights all look cool and they also look very very expensive to replace.

FA 31 Vs Canon's 35 1.4?

One of my friend plan to buy Canon's 35 1.4. The price is not cheap IMO.

But he said it's one of the best in the world. Anyone has experience with it? How well does it compare to Pentax FA 31? Is it ok to mount the FA 31 to a Canon's 5d?

my buddy has the 35 F1.4, it almost never comes off his 30D.

it is a good lens, and on a 5D it would definetly rock.

It's one of Canon's best! I almost convinced myself to splurge on the 35 L for my "normal" prime, but went cheap and bought the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 (which is a great lens as well)

The 35L is quite amazing really. I used the lens along with a few other L's for 4 days a few weeks ago. Used them on a 1D, 1Ds, and 30D with grip. The lens is amazing. Scary sharp even wide open, but stop it down and wow. Only complaint is the CA when shooting wide open or near wide open. I've heard it decribed many a times as possibly Canons best prime ever. I wouldn't doubt it.

Here's a shot on a 1D at f1.6. Shot RAW converted to JPEG in ACR.

I've owned & used both lenses. IMO Canon's 35/1.4 is their best lens. I used it on a 30D and loved it. It's the only thing I liked about the Canon system.

Pentax's 31 Limited is better though.

How about the SMC Pentax-FA 50mm F2.8 Macro? Many consider that as the sharpest Pentax-lens ever.

And what does that have to do with the original question?

I have owned these 2 lenses and I found them quite different in their own ways.

Fa 31 ltd renders high contrast to the image with punchy colour and "depth" to images. The build is classic and boutique. Sharpness is consistent from corner to corner.

35L is a typical Japanese Canon Lens where it concentrates on edge sharpness strongest in the centre weaker at the corners.

Given that I never really tried the two lenses on the same medium with controlled variables, the differences are purely subjective on my part.

I relies on 35L for indoor shots as it is less likely to hunt comparing to Fa 31 ltd.

For scenery or casual photography where accuracy and speed are not required, I opt for Fa 31 ltd.

Bokeh on 35L are low contrast and pretty good against highlight but lacking the "smooth oozing out "desired bokeh under most circumstances (what I considered as good bokeh)

Fa 31 ltd bokeh can be harsh with edges and under exposed noises in the bokeh is a common problem.

Nothing is the best in the world. It is how you use a tool to the best of its ability that counts.

When deciding between Pentax and Canon my consideration was mostly between these two lenses, one of which would be my work horse. Understand that I am by no means a great photographer, just an average Joe, but I do prefer fixed focal length lenses and fast lenses. I chose the 31. I took a trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art Saturday and as much as I wanted to use my new Tamron 17-50/2.8.... The 31 got on the camera pretty quickly. I know the Canon 35L is excellent too, but I think I made the right decision for me.

Nice shots rover! One thing Pentax has going for it is it's sensor-based SR, which makes working with fast primes really nice!

I wish my 30mm f/1.4 and 85mm f/1.8 were stablized, moreso with the 85mm as it's harder to handhold at slow shutter speeds.

Enjoy the 31mm!
