Thank you for your Input

Hi all

I agree the 31 isn't a wide angle lens on the D. I'm interested in that lens because of it's speed and 3D, boken effects.

For wide angle I'm thinking of the Pentax smc P-DA 10-17mm

and for long the Pentax smc P-DA 55-300mm

I agree with Wheatfield the 38 26 36 is a better choice

thank you for your input

The 10-17 is a fun little lens, but unless you like the extra step of de-fisheying every photo, you might want to consider the 12-24 instead. The 10-17 is one of my my least used lenses

I would have bought the 40mm f/2.8 instead. According to various tests, optically, it's a little better than the 31mm f/1.9. And 3 times cheaper. For wide angles, probably, the 12-24mm, or 21mm f/3.5 Ltd. Or wait for new Carl Zeiss Distagon *T 18mm f/3.5 manual focus. It may be a good lens. Manual focus suitable for landscape shots. Or, Tamron 28-75mm which covers 31mm if you really need to cover it.

40mm limited better than the FA 31mm...... not a chance. The 31mm is just amazing. on a film camera I use it as my moderate wide angle and it's perfect. NO distortion whatsoever. On my K10D it's a normal lens at 46mm. Even at 1.8 it's sharp edge to edge. They just don't make lenses like this anymore. All metal too.

On film it maybe better. According to various tests the 40mm ltd outperforms the 31mm ltd on digital SLRs. It was specifically designed to be used on digital cameras.
I think the design of the lenses for digital cameras are slightly different to those which were used on film cameras. Hence, famous legendary lenses on digital cameras are not performing as well as people hoped.

Hey! FTPaddict, that's a good idea! I have holidays, too! I would like to spend some time with a 31mm!
So: If you ...

are in Europe,
AND do not own a SLR (I have the MZ-5N, and the P30)
AND want to trust the 31mm in my hands for a while
AND want to pay the postage for shipment
AND can do a week or two without the lens...

just send it to me! I will publish the results here on the forum of course. And the prints will be for the owner of the lens, too...

Well, FTPaddict, this should do, shouldn't it? I am afraid that we have little chance of succeeding, though!

Cheers,
Syb

I wouldn't be trusting whatever tests you've been reading. I have both lenses, the 31 is definitely better aperture for aperture, and has the advantage of being much better than the 40mm lens at f/1.8.

forget about the tests. See for yourself. I never go by that. That's like saying the EF lenses from Canon don't work well on the crop cameras.... baloney. That's my opinion but Image quality is decided by me eyes not someones "tests"
