Alamo - I tend to agree that it always helps to know what you want to shoot, but the OP really had a redundant pile of crap lenses save the 17-70 and the 50.

The 70-300 is good enough to figure out if you want to play in the long tele game and the 17-70 and 50 will help figure out the prime vs zoom and short range/walk around game.

If it were me...(Who am I kidding? If it were me, I'd keep them all. lol)...I'd keep #3 and #8 and either #6 or #7 if I wanted an all-in-one zoom for a walking-around lens. Then I'd sell the rest, buy a 50mm macro with the proceeds, and go from there.

I think it would sting a bit to see one's equipment described in those terms, however solid the underlying facts.

Yes. A little harsh and elitist. The THINK mnemonic comes to mind....

True. Helpful. Inspiring. Necessary. Kind. That one?

Pretty sure the OP is attempting to cut down on clutter and is in process, with the purchase of the 17-70, of upgrading to better glass. Some truth about the other lenses in his stock can only help move them on to new ownership and inspire to further upgrades.

The best purchases of my photographic career have been good glass.

I haven't seen anything that would change my original recommendation. I have a Sigma 70-300. I go out and shoot with it every now and then, but it doesn't produce images like the 55-300, which doesn't produce results like the DA*60-250 or DA* 300. I consider the 55-300 to be good enough in the long end that regardless of what you get, you'll still like those images. The Sigma is really good from 100-200 but the long end is only good up close and in macro it's just soft. I'd seriously suggest , it's not a lens you want to keep if you're trimming things down.

That said, I still have mine and I still haul it out every now and then.

Sigma 70-300

Sitting in the same blind with the same tripod a few days later. DA*60-240 with 1.4 TC

From what i've seen the 55-300 would have done a lot better. Sure you can mess around to see what you want to shot, but some of the keepers you get with it are not going to be keepers anymore after you get a better lens.

It is noticeable at screen size.

You can speak the blunt truth without being impolite about it.

No such thing as a crap lens,as an example....dxo rates the lenscap 15mm Olympus lower than any other lens they have reviewed....I bought it knowing that, and after watching Blunty's youtube.
I'm not saying its good but in bright light its not crap.I've got good images from it.
All the old FF glass I have must be crap too...its OLD,hasn't got the modern coatings,no motors,no stabilisers.Wouldn't be worth much so I'll just have to hang onto them. When's that K1 being delivered?

Thanks for all the comments and input!

I did put in my post that they were nothing too fancy so I take no offense. Also, having spent 11 years in Fairbanks I understand the cold can get to people

I mostly take photos in the green mode so I am not too advanced of a photographer. Most of my photos now are of my kids inside and outdoors. Although, the 17-70mm did not seem to like the green mode much but that is not a bad thing.

I do like the idea of picking up the 55-300 WR so I think I will keep #3, #4, and #5 and try to unload the others.

Not a bad choice.

Now you need to get out of green mode a lot more - at least venture into P or Av - and experiment.

Hi,
I have a few too many lenses and wanted to get opinions on which lenses to keep.

Here is what I have. Nothing too fancy which fits my skills and usage.

1. Pentax SMC DA L 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL WR (K-50 Kit Lens)
2. Pentax SMC DA L 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL (K-S1 Kit Lens)
3. Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC Macro C (Contemporary)
4. Tamron AF 18-200mm F/3.5-6.3 XR Di II LD Aspherical [IF] MACRO
5. Pentax SMC DA 50mm f1.8
6. Tamron AF (IF) 28-105mm f4-5.6
7. Sigma DC 18-125mm f/3.5-5.6
8. Sigma APO DG 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Macro

I think I only need one body so I was thinking of getting rid of the K-S1 along with the lens. I just acquired #3 and like it so I think I would keep that. Otherwise, any opinions on lenses to keep or get rid of.

Thanks!
I would keep 1,3,5 and 8 for the reasons everyone has alr day stated. 17-300 mm with the two sigmas is the main kit, the WR lens if you think you need it, and the prime. But keep two bodies, it can be useful

Your thread got me thinking about my own lens collection, and I realized there's no reason not to pare it down.

So gone will be a

~DA L 18-55 WR
~DA 50-200 ED WR
~Pentax DA 35 WR 2.4
~Pentax F35-70 Macro Zoom
~Sigma 70-300 DL Macro Super
~Pentax (Takumar Bayonet) 135

and the keepers?
~Sigma 17-50 EX DC 2.8
~Pentax DA 21 Limited
~Pentax DA 50 1.8
~HD DA 55-300 WR
~D FA 100 Macro
~Kiron 105 Macro (at least for now)
~Pentax M400mm 5.6
~Pentax F 1.7x teleconverter (Coming in a couple of days)

Anyone disagree? I think I've covered pretty much all I'd encounter for the most part, and my primary interest is macro anyway with a minor in general wildlife. Not all that much into portrait stuff and the ones I'm selling have rarely been used so far.

Not many people rate the kit lens but its WR and won't fetch much ,

if you sell the body its a good accompaniment

For those that have sold camera gear, where did you find the most success? The marketplace or eBay?

2, 4, and 6 are gone. I have the rest (except k-50,17-70,and 50) on the marketplace and eBay. I am toying with the idea of trying to sell the k-50 for a k-3 or k-s2. I am also keeping an eye out for a 55-300mm WR.
