DA 16-85 focusing problem

Has anyone had any issues with the 16-85 so far? From what I read here it has been very trouble free.

However, this week while on vacation mine quit auto-focusing. Manual focusing works fine. Auto-focusing results in a slight back and forth movement of the lens and then the blinking green hex. It will sometimes focus at infinity but never closer than that.

Tried several other lenses on the body including the 18-135 and 60-250 and those work fine.

Tried the 16-85 on a different body and get the same failure.

Getting ready to send it in to Precision but thought I would post here in case anyone has had a similar issue or has any DIY solutions.

Mine has been trouble free. The DC motors are generally very reliable. Keep us posted; it would be useful to know the cause.

Sorry to hear that, John. As you know, I had a couple of defective examples supplied new, but unrelated to the problem you're seeing. When I experienced problems, I searched high and low on the web and came across other instances of the problems I'd found, but don't recall anything to do with AF. The only thing I can find that may be related is *this*.

I'm having the exact same issue with the 16-85.

The lens will take a slight step towards focus but that's it. Tried different bodies K-5 and K-7 with the same result. Other lenses work fine.

Were you able to find a solution?

Sent to precision, repaired under warranty. I suspect ( but do not know) that a screw or something came loose preventing the lens from focusing. Has been fine ever since.

That's what happened to mine. In fact, the screw worked its way right out of the lens. Fixed by CRK free of charge, even though it was out of warranty. They guessed that insufficient loctite had been applied in manufacturing.

I had same problem caused by loose supply contacts on the lens. Contacts can be easily removed by unscrewing two tiny screws next to the contacts. After cleaning and tensioning everything seems to be ok.
