Sliding zoom issue

I have Tokina 35-105 mm. f:3.5-4.5 zoom lens with sliding mechanism, bought middle of 80:s. When pointing upwards or downwards the mechanism moves and it is not good thing. I opened the cylinder, there are not possibility of adjusting. Can be used some thick vaseline to hold still? Or something else? Otherwise it is a good lens although it is manual focusing.

"Zoom creep", all too common on my old zoom lenses. Some creep and some just slide as if they have been oiled especially to slide. There is a rubber band sold that loops over the two parts of a zoom lens. Try "zoom creep problem" in your browser and you will find some fixes and a lot of fellow sufferers.

A strip of 'Gorilla Tape' of varying width (depending upon the degree of slack) stuck fore and aft on the underside of the lens barrel sometimes works for me...

Haven't used Gorilla Tape, but a short strip of standard, black electrical tape stopped the creep (free-fall, really) on my beer can.
