I thought I'd resurrect my old thread to let you know I've finally pulled the trigger on a used Pentax 10-17mm.
It took a while as I had to let a few slide by as ebay madness took over, but finally found what looks like a good one at a good price.
Thank you all for your help deciding. Can't wait to give it a spin!

You'll like it. I love mine. It's a versatile lens, one that can go from pure fisheye distortion to very interesting wide angles, with a certain 'punch' that I cannot get from any other lens.

For these 'punchy' wide angles I usually select 17mm , get close to the subject at hand and then go through my 'body English' movement...up and down, clicking away till I find the angle and 'look' I want...for the picture.

I'm not describing it well, but try it...move around...go low...go mid level...go high...this lens is full of wonderful photographic surprises.

I believe the late, great Herbert Keppler once said (and I'm paraphrasing) that if he were alone, on a desert island....and could only have one camera and one lens...it would be a Pentax fisheye zoom....with a Pentax mount camera.

My new acquisition has arrived but I'm a little worried as it rattles a bit if I shake it front to back.
It seems sharp enough and the zoom and focus move smoothly, so it doesn't seem to cause problems... but seems unusual for a Pentax lens.
Anyone else's copy do this?

Why would you shake a lens? I don't understand.

Because I heard a rattle when I was moving it about and I wondered what was going on. Something inside moves front/back but not side to side.
It's the only lens I have that does that, so I was concerned and wondered if it's normal for this particular lens.
Does yours do it?

I gave mine a gentle shake (not something I would normally do) and detected a slight rattle front to back but not side to side.

Thank you for trying that for me that puts my mind at rest. Must be something about the way it's constructed, I guess.
