Absolutely had Lightroom profiles for each lens enabled.
Oh, really! I thought you said that you did not include corrections.

You still haven't made any choices even though you claim to know which is the 18-55 and which is the 18-135

Waiting until the big reveal to say 'yes I knew it all along' ??

C, D for 18-55 and 18-135, though I don't know which is which. At least that is my initial impression. As for the "big reveal", I feel that you did a good job making a very valid point, that with appropriate technique and processing even consumer lenses can provide very decent results. FWIW, I have not posted there for awhile, but have been a supporting member of the "Kit Lens Club" on this site since near its beginning.

Here are the full sized 'straight out of camera' images:

Technically these are DNG (raw) and converted with ACR (in Lightroom 4) but without any boosts (no saturation, no clarity, no contrast, no sharpening, no CA adjustment) or lens profiles.

Thanks for your guesses. I'll post the results tomorrow.

And neat club. I'll have to peruse that one a bit. We live in a photographic 'world' today where even the cheapest offered lenses (kit) and DSLR bodies are quite capable of phenomenal output. That kit lens club has over 100 pages, it seems, of support to that notion.

The above base imports confirm for me that:
  • "A" is the DA 50/1.8 (LaCA on the roof vent and around lounge chair legs was the give-away)
  • "C" is the DA 18-135 (corner soft even at best focal length)
  • "D" is the DA L 18-55 (softest wide open at its long end)
  • "B" and "E" are the two DA* lenses

Steve

(...I own the DA 50/1.8 and DA 18-55 and am familiar with their performance...The DA 18-135 I placed according to its reputation, leaving the two best images for the DA* lenses...)

Correct answers:

a = DA* 50-135
b = DA 50
c = DAL 18-55
d = DA 18-135
e = DA* 16-50

Congrats to Mr. Fox for uncannily answering ALL OF THEM correctly. Fantastic guessing indeed.

Biggest shock to me (besides Fox answering correctly off the first try ) was, even for me, the DA* 50-135 performing sharper than my prime 50 f/1.8 at f/4 aperture -- it really is a pocket full of primes. Sharpest lens I own.

Next up is the DAL 18-55. My copy has no contact pins in it so I had to manually focus and green button to take a photo. Plus, at the time, I didn't realize it was incapable of reaching f/4-4.5 so it got stopped down a little more than the others.

I find the DA 18-135 did a nice job too at f/4.5 (fastest it will perform at ~50mm). It is a nicer lens than I probably have given credit to in the past.

Thank you to all who participated. I hope you had fun as I did.

I am not surprised that the DA* zoom outperformed the 50/1.8. What surprises me is the amount of LaCA in the uncorrected "A" image if from the DA* 50-135. I just took a look at the Klaus' review at photozone.de and sure enough, he found significant CA at the extremes of the zoom range.

To be frank, before I performed this little game, I thought my 50 prime was the sharpest, cleanest lens I owned. Kind of amusing to me that a zoom beat it.. until I look at the price difference of each lens brand new. I find it is still a really nice, small, lightweight package though.

And, even saying that, the differences are miniscule once corrections and other makeup are applied.

Thanks I must say I am as surprised as you are. I did base my guesstimates on inspecting the images, especially the corners, but I would be lying if I claimed I was certain about any of them.

It's interesting all around. I could only see one detail and that was the six shingles to the left of the scuffed area. I could only see it on the kit lenses. Will put my glasses on and be amazed by the pics on a big screen now. I thought small screen and unclear vision might highlight something and perhaps it did.

Absolutely had Lightroom profiles for each lens enabled. Wait until I post the unaffected images.. THAT is when it gets interesting (aka much more obvious).
Here in the Hat when it gets to 38 C with the Humidex it is like 38 and 44 feels like 44. Our lenses never get fungus from the humidity. We call that too hot. Minus 40 is too cold

I suspect that isn't normal for that area.. if so I could understand the name of the town. A Hat of Medicine would be useful.

Most summers we get days or weeks above 36 and 38 is not uncommon, into the 40s is less common. Blue cloudless skies is also very common summer or winter. The area is a semi desert in classification, mostly grasslands and irrigation farming with some dryland farming but a lot of ranching. I do not like August most years.

The story is that a medicine man lost his hat in a battle here. Saamis is the blackfoot name being medicine man's hat. We are in the top 2 ir 3 fir hottest, sunniest and dries cities in Canada.
