SMC PENTAX-A 1:2,8 135mm

Hi everyone!

Despite of information provided on this page, I would like to know what's Your opinion on this lens.

I found one in local shop for ~300USD and I wonder whether it is worth it's price. The sale is titled "legendary and rare", but is it all it is?
I'd be grateful for Your opinion and few shots taken with this lens(if You have any). Links to galleries with photos taken using SMC PENTAX-A 1:2,8 135mm would be great addition.

Thanks

Seems pricy at USD300.

I have this lens and it performs well enough. A sample image taken with the K100D and the A 135mm.

Definitely overpriced.

Stan has these entries on this lens:

*********************************************
Arne Lie - . . . I think you should avoid this one. It has 4 elements/4 groups,. . . It was replaced by the F135/2.8 in 1989, which is the same optically as the FA135/2.8 which I own and love. The latter has 0.7 meters min distance, as compared to the 1.2m for the A-model. I think the M135/3.5 is far better, though slower.

- - - - - -

George Stanley - . . . Wide open at f/2.8 the resolution and contrast is very, very poor, and the lens does not get really sharp till f/5.6. Pentax tried to cut costs with this lens, and made it a 4-group, 4-element design. Even their SMC Pentax 135mm f/3.5 (M & non-M) had 5-element designs. Their latest SMC Pentax-FA 135mm f/2.8 lens has a 7-group, 8-element design. At the time, the various magazine test reviews on this SMC-A 135/2.8 were embarrassingly bad, and it was discontinued after a short & sad life.

- - - - - -

David S - I had the 135 2.8 A, it is not a sharp lens & you should avoid it.

- - - - - -

Yoshihiko Takinami - . . . As for the optical performance, K135/3.5 is far sharper wide open than A135/2.8. A135/2.8 is a bit soft.

danielchtong, I was quite hesitant to get this lens myself when I read those comments posted on stan's website but I have found the lens to be quite a good performer from my own tests. Maybe I got a good copy...

Thanks to all of You for reply. I did a research meanwhile and found that lens I found is way too overpriced. After reading some reviews, taking Your opinion under consideration, I find no explanation for such high price

Once again thank You for quick reply to this post.

regardless of the image quality, when you consider I paid about 1/3 that price for an excellent condition K135 F2.5, I don't see the value in this lens.

loss of 1/2 stop does not compensate for an "A" setting, and the 135F2.5 is a great lens all round.
