SMC / SMCP any difference?

At my local Camera store all lenses are marked SMC-DA etc.
But now I was surfing into BH photo and all lenses are marked SMCP.

Is there a difference in the lenses or just local differences in naming?

(Im a beginner in this and im getting my K20d next week )

There should be no difference. The only thing I can think is that perhaps one store is importing gray market equipment, and they lenses are branded slightly differently.
FWIW, my newer lenses, all bought from the official Canadian supplier are marked SMC Pentax-DA.
If you want warranty protection, it's a good idea to make sure that your equipment is coming from the official supplier in your country.

the smc and smcP refer to the multi-coating pentax uses on its lenses, the DA referes to the specific series of lens. there is no difference between an smc and an smcP lens, technically any smc K mount lens is an smcP pentax just doesn't include the P on the lens barrel. I havent come across any information that suggests otherwise. basically they should be used interchangably. so any lens you see that is described as smcP just look at all of them as smc and just ignore the P. I have included some links that describe in detail the different lens series and what there designations mean. I hope this helps.

I don’t know but could the P indicate the new SP “Super Protection” coating that Pentax has been adding to some front elements of the lens to make it easier to clean?

This would mean that SMC was just Super Multi Coating and SMCP was the same but with the new SP coating add.
