FF wide angle?

Hi,

I'm upgrading my 18-55mm to a set of primes. I want them to be FF compatible (even if I have to stop them down a bit, as long as the IQ is great), because I'll probably buy the K-1 or its successor in a more or less close future.
I first bought a DA 50mm f/1.8, and then a FA* 24mm f/2. I'll buy the DA 35mm f/2.4 to complete the kit.

That could have been perfect, but I'm not happy at all with the FA* 24mm (huge CAs and really poor sharpness in corners, even on APS-C), and I'd like some advices to replace it.
It will be for landscaping, so I'm looking for a great IQ corner to corner (something like the DA 50), rather than for a bokeh monster. I'm also looking for something quite cheap (no more than 400€) and lightweight. A DA 24mm f/4 like the 35 & 50 would have been the one.

Any advice?

would you be okay with manual focus lenses? I believe the K24 is quite a good prime or perhaps the K18 ?

If manual focus is ok look at the Samyang lenses.

Or the Pentax-A 20mm.

Otherwise the fa*24 is what we have for now.

Mmmh AF is a great plus, but sure for landscapes a manual focusing lens could be OK.
But I doubt that a K lens would be better than the FA*24, right? I don't know much about Samyang lenses, I'll search a bit in this way.

Anything else?? The other option is to wait 2017, and hope that one of the new primes will fit my needs. But I suspect that at least the price will cause some problems (and eventually the weight, looking at the latest releases) ^^

SamYang/Rokinon 14mm = wide, FF, affordable & sharp.

Plus there are correction profiles for the lens in Lightroom (as of Lightroom CC 2015.4 / 6.4) and DxO Optics Pro (when mounted on the K-3/K-5 etc).

Of course, wide angle primes are serious stuff.

I'll suggest the Samyang 14mm and 24mm as relatively low cost. MF of course.

Of course my opinion is only based on heresay and pictures ive seen on flickr etc, but the K18 seems to be quite a good performer actually, also on FF in the K-1 picture thread there was a post

SMC Pentax 18mm F3.5 Reviews - K Prime Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database

have a look at the 24mm versions:
SMC Pentax 24mm F3.5 Reviews - K Prime Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database

SMC Pentax 24mm F2.8 Reviews - K Prime Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database

but of course, the A/ FA 20mm seems to be a great lens too. perhaps have a look also at the FA 20-35mm f4, F 24-50mm F4 and F 17-28mm fisheye.
I think in the end it comes down to personal preferences, i dont like the 'look' of the samyang lenses, but that is just me. i think its a little early to judge all these lenses as there arent so many pictures showing its quality on a FF, but time will tell

Remember you could always use legacy glass too as autofocus is not such an issue on WA lenses.

Might I suggest either of these two... the SMC Pentax-A 15mm F3.5 or SMC Pentax-A 20mm F2.8, would serve you well... if you can find them.

I am looking for a 20mm/21mm lens that delivers outstanding results. I don't need f/2.8, but its weight should be low. And very important: I fell in love with the stars my smc DA 15mm delivers, I also want that on my K1 (using all of the sensors surface). The DFA 15-30 is for sure what I am looking for optically, however, I don't need a zoom and I don't need f/2.8. The stars of my M20/4 are OK but still not like those of my DA15. Has anyone experience with the Voigtländer Color Skopar 20mm with the qenox adapter (Nikon F -> Pentax K)?

So, to put it in a nutshell, we have:

Pentax:
- FA* 24mm f/2
- K 18 f/3.5
- K 24 f/3.5
- K 24 f/2.8
- FA 20mm f/2.8
- A 15mm f/3.5

Samyang:
- 14mm f/2.8
- 24mm f/2.8

The FA 20mm f/2.8 has really good reviews. But the "bad" experience I had with the FA* 24mm f/2 makes me hesitate.
I'll look in this way though.

Thanks !

I'm very happy with the few shots I have taken with the FA20/2.8 on the K-1

I'll have my FA20-35 (still a very good, light and compact lens) on the marketplace very soon if anyone's interested

I would add a few more:

- Pentax K 20/4 -- arguably the best 20mm Pentax lens, hard to find
- Pentax A 24/2.8
- Cosina Voigtlander 20/4 Color Skopar -- still available new in some stores
- Cosina Zeiss 18/3.5 and 21/2.8 -- outstanding but very expensive lenses, also hard to find in K-mount (ZK).

Or move to 28mm which is still a 18mm FoV in the APS-C world. Both the K and M 28/3.5's are good lenses stopped down a little and pretty consistent across the frame. The Pentax 24mm lens I gather all tend to suffer from a fair degree of field curvature. Centres are sharp but edges and corners are a challenge. As you go wider and wider field curvature seems to be an increasing challenging design problem and/or the smearing distortions at the edges from maintaining rectilinear projection.

Depending on subject matter, if 28mm isn't wide enough you could stitch 2 or 3 28mm images together.
