Get the 10-17. Far better IQ from the limited experience that I had with the 10-20 that I sent back to B&H.

I have the same question. The 10-17 is on sale for around 297 bucks +tax at B&H ( I returned it after buying it because I want to buy it through the forum link so they get credit) or the Sig 10-20 3.5 which is on sale as well for 399.99. Also there are a couple of used copies being offered for sub 300 bucks. So my dilemma now is which one to buy because both cost about 300 bucks.

I plan to use a wide angle lens to photograph landscape pictures, general walk around lens and also for some astrophotography which is fascinating to me but have never tried. Pictures of the galaxy is something I would like to get with this new lens.

So forum members can you please give me your advice about which direction to go?

Here are the lenses I've accumulated after buying my first Pentax DSLR - KS2 (which I really like)
18-135 Kit lens, DA 35, DA 50, Sigma Macro 70mm 2.8, Pentax 55-300 PLM and an old lens from Pentax 105mm with a screw mount for which I have an original adapter.

Please share your wisdom with this confused old man.

The Sigma 10-20 and the DA 10-17 FE do slightly different things, but I find I use the DA 10-17 far more often for a few reasons:
  • If I want wide, the 10-17 is far wider.
  • If I want rectilinear wide, the 10-20 is more useful, but from about 14mm, the 10-17mm can be touched up in post-processing to achieve close to a 15mm rectilinear (though the picture size will be smaller). With shots without straight lines (e.g., many nature shots), the 10-17 is not noticeably fishy. (Just keep your horizon level!)
  • The 10-17 is much smaller and easier to carry around.
  • The 10-17 encourages me to be more creative in my shots.

The 10-17 is a fisheye, the 10-20 is a conventional UW zoom. Another possibility is the 12-24 f4.

I have the 10-17, and mainly use it at either 10 or 17 mm

at 10mm, it is a 180 degree fisheye
Sample at 10mm:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BpLFxe6gjfu/

at 17mm, it doesn't look too fisheye, but it is still a fisheye.! at 17 it definitely wider then DA15. it looks more like 12mm for conventional ultra-wild lens.
Sample at 17mm:

I am using K3 and never have problem handheld it at night (not only indoor low light). I guess it can be applied to all ultra wide lens. the last link of both 10mm and 17mm samples are handheld.

it always sharp edge to edge, and I have never hesitaged to use it wideopen too.

What I don't like;
1. I don't like its ugly and very unattractive starburst effect. I might be expecting too much in this deapartment. I love the one I see from DA21 and 15.
2. Chromatic Aberration, this one is very easy to fix in post, so I don't think it is must of a problem here.

I replace DA15 with 10-17 and keep the 21. DA15 is a very good lens but it is not wide enough when I want to get really wide. and Nothing,,, nothing can replace the DA21 smc. I really mean nothing! I wish 10-17 startburst effect looks similar to what I see on DA15 (I know, I am asking too much.)
Check out DA21 for walk around too. You might like it. If you are interesting in DA21, I would recomment to get the older version, green ring. It has nicer starburst and its bokeh doesn't look that bad to me. Keep in mind, the last thing I consider from a Wide-angle lens is bokeh anyway.

Thanks to all of you that responded. Decided to go with the Pentax 10-17 from B&H and thanks again for your valuable input. Hopefully it is a fun lens to have in the bag.

10-17mm fisheye arrived and I couldn't wait to take some pictures. Color rendering is perfect as is the sharpness. I'm so happy I bought this lens guys.

Just out of interest, why is the 12-24 f4 commanding double the price of the sigma? Is it to do with the IQ?

At B&H, the Pentax lens is "only" 60% more than the Sigma lens. If nothing else, Sigma sells variants of their lenses for other mounts, including Canon's EF-S mount, so they can spread the optical portion of development costs over many many more units.

I might as well jump in here. Last year I gamed the system by ordering the Sigma 10-20 f3.5 and the Pentax 10-17mm fisheye on Amazon from two different vendors and overlapping the 30 day return windows with the intent of only keeping one after using both. I ended up keeping the Sigma and returning the Pentax because I thought I would end up over using the fisheye effect and then not using the lens at all, whereas the Sigma rectilinear 10-20 would be useful in more situations.

As I’ve posted elsewhere, voices in my head convinced me to sell the 10-20 and get the Sigma 8-16mm. Of course, I did it in the reverse order. A buddy offered to buy the 10-20 but backed out so now I have both Sigma wide angle zooms (and the 03 Fisheye for the Q7 but different voices talked me down that path.)

Recently some well meaning soul posted that B&H is selling the Pentax 10-17mm fisheye for less than $300 and the voices in my head are whispering that I need it too. The voices assure me that I’m not mentally ill for wanting three UWA lenses.
