My K-3 seems to have a hard time locking focus with the D-FA 24-70. Images can front focused, back focused, or waaaay out of focus even though the K-3 gives me a focus confirmation each time. Focusing is quick and silent with only a tiny little click sound. Since this is my first SDM lens I'm not sure if this is normal.

When the system does lock focus properly ... Oh ... wow! Haha! The center is razor sharp (almost prime like) and the corners/edges are just slightly soft when pixel peeping at 100% on a 21" monitor. Stop the lens down to f/4 - f/6.3 for a little depth of field and the images can be heavenly.

You should be able to access the full size image and pixel peep. I focused on his left eye.

That's a great capture, though you shouldn't be getting inconsistent results like that.

But yes, it's normal for the lens to be nearly silent. By the way, since the 24-70mm is made by Tamron, its SDM sounds completely different than the SDM in the original DA* lineup.
