Number Numbers. Everywhere Numbers (Lens's compared)

So who doesn't like a bunch of data?

EXACTLY! WE ALL DO! :P

With the DA*'s within my price reach at the moment, I started seriously investigating the measured differences between a host of other lenses I'm familiar with. So to settle the argument for me, once and for all, I've collated data from PhotozoneDE from measurements they recorded of a K10.

It's edit friendly so if you wish to continue to collate rubbish by all means.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/15ZJ_Zq09J5H4897pY_RkEWq6xiLAQphg6Ds3...it?usp=sharing

I was mostly interested in the DA* 16-50mm and if it was worth lusting after in comparison to say a DA 15, 21, 35, 50

So for me, Yes. I can accept a trade off in correcting CA in post for the other benefits that the Zoom offer.

T'was interesting to see how the resolution and fall off from EV really wasn't that different from the DA 15, Which I confess was the greatest worry. As I have seen sooooo many lovely images of the DA15. Good to know the DA* at 16 should be as capable.

Spreadsheets make me lose the will to live.
I like pictures.

Buy lenses. If they make you happy, keep them.

Yes yes we all like pictures, that is why we are here.

And you won't dare catch me researching / creating data and rubbish like this from test charts. But as I only have a finite amount of cash to throw at things, and not the opportunity to test them all, some reference point to aid a decision is welcomed.

And more to the point, it is worth noting how similar everything really is. And that really should be the message.

All digital pictures are created through a given set of data that is presented by a lens to the camera sensor. Of course, the actual photographer decides what is in that data, but the lens/camera combo can have an effect on the final result.

Whats wrong with looking at how the lens and the camera influence that data to help aid in the decision? As a Pentaxian currently suffering from LBA and having missed his last few LBA support group meetings, its nice to see information like this collated into a spreadsheet. It may just help me avoid buying that next lens and give me a positive story for the next time I attend said meeting....

Or maybe not

I used to be a numbers guy and looked at this stuff to pick my lenses. I ended up finding that it didn't help my final decision if I liked a lens or not. Example: Helios-44 F2, It is not sharp wide open, has some crazy blur, and is difficult to operate / get in focus. BUT... One of my favorite lenses.

I second the Buy, Try, Keep/Sell method above. I would add that reading the personal reviews here is helpful, but just keep in mind a lens may speak to you unlike it does for others. Get the lens you like and fire away.

Numbers, comparisons, ... but who careas how much more a 15 mm lens resolves compared to 35 mm from the same company? Either you need a 15 or you need a 35. And this does not even include price and many other parameters in the equation.

I see these numbers as not a pain staking measure of which to get, but as a reminder that the difference we get excited about optically, are minuscule.
