Fine Dust in D-FA* 70-200 2.8 Zoom/Focus Rings

So I've made the unfortunate choice of lending my new D-FA* 70-200 to my father, and it has returned with loudly gritty zoom and focusing rings. So I am faced with the decision of sending it of immediately to CRKennedy, or to persevere with it and hope it will self resolve. Will continued use of the lens in this state damage the lens further (I expect this to be answered yes)?

DFA70-200 is internal zoom and internal focusing? If so, how can this be that dust would produce "loudly gritty zoom and focusing rings."? Weird.

Well the Finke Desert Race is pretty brutal, so most probably...

The sand and dust in Alice Springs is incredibly fine (finer than sea sand), and the large amounts of it kicked up during the Finke Desert Race is large, so I'm assuming he just got too close to the action.

Sounds like a failure in the weather seals. Send it back under warranty without delay!

I've had good luck with CRKennedy and warranty repairs, so I'm hoping they'll be kind and CLA it under warranty.

I do agree, it's just unfortunate that at 20, a $2700 AUD lens makes for significant investment on my side of things, and I really don't want to be replacing the lens 3 months in.

Bulldust will get in everywhere because it's particle distribution is measured in microns. It gets thrown up in copious quantities and won't readily settle. Send to CRK.

I would start by saying the lens failed and see where that takes you. After all, it could have!

I would be suggesting to your father, in the strongest language possible, that he should be footing any repair bill.

At least he's a Pentax shooter.

CR Kennedy have been great with a couple repairs we have had warranty and paid. They can be just a bit slow.
