Input from Owners: 40mm Limited x FA 35mm

I tried out the FA 35mm last week at B&H and I loved how compact and light it was. I was ready to place my order once I realized that the Limited 40mm, which is even smaller and lighter, was also cheaper.

Between the two FL, 35mm is more suitable for what I need. Also, the 35mm is a bit faster, but the difference is minimal, but still a point for the 35mm.

On the other hand, the Limited's have a great rep, it is a great walk-around lens (light and compact) and it is almost $50 cheaper! And it is a Limited.

Can someone bring some light to me? If the 40mm is gonna give me very close angle of view to a 35mm and the speed difference is also negligible, i guess i should go with the Limited, correct? Or not?

Compare the lenses on Photozone.de and choose according to your requirements would be my advice.

Unless you need the brighter maximum aperture (the FA35mm f/2 lets in twice as much light wide open as the 40), then there isn't really much to say between the two optically (opinion based on making prints from both lenses, not from reading online reviews)
You may find that the 40mm lens is a bit harder to manually focus because of it's very small size (I find it to be too small), and the viewfinder is always going to be half as bright because of the smaller maximum aperture.

Great site! Loved the short but precise reviews.

Anyways, after reading their findings and other reviews, it seems like:

Image Quality: Tie?
Focal Lenght: 35mm
Low Light: 35mm
AF Speed: 40mm
Price: 40mm
Weight/Size: 40mm
Lens Quality: 40mm

I think i'll go back to B&H and compare sidebyside

I got both, and to be totally honest, I use the 40 a LOT and hardly use the 35 at all. The 35 is a good lens, almost the same size as the FA50/1.4, except for the extra length to accommodate the snap-on hood. The 40 is my default lens and is on the camera most of the time. I should really sell the 35 because I don't use it much at all.

I had the FA 35mm and sold it. This lens is very sharp but that's all it is. There is no character in this lens. For me it was souless. After I sold it I bought the DA 40mm Limited. I use this lens much more than I used FA 35mm. I find it has it's own character and REALLY like the rendering of the bokeh. Yes, I loose 1 stop (f/2 vs. v/2.8) but I get much more.
I hated the look of the FA 35mm, I could not stand it's ugly barrel (I hate the barrel of the FA 50mm f/1.4 which I also sold even though it is a GREAT lens). Call me stupid if you want but I hate plastic primes. If I have to cope with the limitation of a prime at least it has to be made of metal. I think I got spoled by my Limiteds (DA 21mm, DA 40, FA 77mm) and now it is very hard to go back to plastic-fantastic (another reason why I hardly use my DA 16-45 and DA 50-200).
