It's pretty easy to find the filter size of lenses. Just look it up on B&H (or wherever) and it should be right there in the specifications.

Okay

right guys thanks. It doesn't seem worth stocking up with filters for the Pentax lens then if I'm gonna be using the Sigma 17-70 as my carry about lens ! I havn't bought the lens yet but I should do soon.

Get filters for your largest lens and then use some stepdown rings.

More . . .

Hi guys, on the subject of filters what do you guys see as the most useful to have ? At the moment I am thinking of UV, polorizer, and not sure about ND filter.
What do you use the most ?

The Kit lens is 52mm whereas the Sigma is of 72mm. My suggestion is to get the good quality filter and not those non MC ones And they are not cheap. Get a 52-72 mm adapter which I just checked is around $8 includ shipping. And the two lenses can share the same filter

It depends on what you want to do. No two people have the same set of filters.

a Circular Polarizer is a good general filter to have as it cuts reflections and intensifies colors (especially on leaves).

a Neutral Density (ND) filter is useful when you want to reduce the amount of light coming in, either for using wide apertures in bright light, or using slower shutter speeds to blur water.

UV, useful in high altitudes to block out UV light. Many people use as a lens protector. Resist this urge.

I use an IR filter as well. It blocks out everything above the deep reds and allows IR to be captured.

The only problem with a 52-72 step-up ring is that the 72mm filters will not play nice with the hoods of the Pentax lenses.

I have a UV filter, CP, and ND4 for my Sigma 17-70. The ND4 is good for waterfalls although I'm thinking I might want an ND8 too. The ND4 is a better compromise if you only have one ND filter.
