I believe this is due to stocks from Japan. Somehow Nikon F mount is cheaper than other mounts. I believe if u check for other mounts, the price aren't much different from Pentax mount.

Why would it be cheaper? I don't get it.

One explanation - Nikon/Canon have more alternatives, more choices ("replacement goods" in macro-economic terms?) The price has to be lower to make it more attractive to them.

Obvious first question is are the prices from the same vendor?

Even if they are, it's called supply and demand. If the vendor can sell 50 of the Nikon mounts for every 5 Pentax, he can 1) probably get them cheaper, and 2) cut his profit margin.

It's always about the $$$$.

I don't have an answer to why only Nikon mount is cheaper. But here's one vendor who tends to ship Tamron directly from Japan.

That is strange.
I know that Sigma charges the same price for all their systems, and I would have thought every company would

I wonder if the Nikon mount is somehow more affordable to make.

BTW was Nikon the last mount that was release for this lens? If it is, maybe there was a price drop for the lens, and some vendors are still trying to sell the ex-stocks at old proce due to their cost.

I've noticed the price difference for some time. I use pricegrabber.com quite often and can compare there easily.
I think Tom S has the answer though. Canon and Nikon out sale Pentax by a large margin.

This has frustrated me since I have purchase my K10D. My thinking was that the backward compatablity of Pentax would allow me a larger selection of lenses on the used market and was planning on have a lot of fun. However I think the price of lenses has went up drasticly in the last few years because of this. Also, I see adapters for canon and other brands to use K mount lenses which lessens the pickings.
I wish there was a K mount adapter to canon lenses or nikon.

When it is all said and done though, I am truely glad I went Pentax. Proud owner!!

Lots of good thoughts in this discussion, but I'd bet the main reason is simple economics: there are many more Canon & Nikon DSLRs out there than there are Pentaxes. If a company is going to sell more lenses meant for camera X than those meant for camera Y, then it is going to be cheaper to manufacture the lens that has the mount for camera X.

I could be mistaken. I'm no economist, but I do read a lot of articles ...

I might be wrong but I think that there are 2 reasons
1) the Tamron has to compete with the popular 18-200 VR
2) I am not sure on this one, but I think that there are Tamrons 18-250 with motors for the D40 that costs the same than the ones from Pentax and hence, they drop the prices on the older models.

I dont see any harm anywhere.

"Today on eekbay" says it all Wal.

Today at adorama:
Nikon mount: $479.90
Sony/Maxxum mount: $479.90
Pentax mount: $479.90
Canon mount: $479.90

Just seller's discretion perhaps on eekbay, that's all. After all, it seems Pentax glass has been hard to come by ever since the K10D/K100D combo came out. Maybe the seller knows they can't keep Pentax stuff in stock so they raise the price a little to eek out more profit.

I just came across this and have to agree, it is the "replacement goods" process that controls the market through supply only.

I once had the top marketing guy of Porsche North America tell me that Porsche could make more gross income by selling more cars at lower prices, but it was a conscious marketing decision by Porsche AG to keep prices stabilized by limiting production, not just to get top dollar for the new cars but to maintain inflated prices for older (used) models. That way the original buyers felt supported, remained loyal to the marque, and repurchased at one of the highest rates in the industry despite the high (inflated) new car prices.
