Have some lenses lying around and thought I'd check them in real life against each other.

Four Images:

1. 36 MPx Pentax K-1 + HD DFA 150-450mm
2. 22 MPx Canon 5D Mark III + EF 100-400 mm II
3. 22 MPx Canon 5D Mark III + EF 100-400 mm II + x1,4 III
4. 22 MPx Canon 5D Mark III + Sigma 150-600mm

Comments:
The sharpening on the Canon is set to stronger than the K-1 and there was some 20 min between the shots.
The native 100-400 shot was by mistake set to F8. But I have other shots where I know that the image quality does not differ really bewteen F5.6 and F8, quite similarly to the DFA 150-450.
I ran the Canon RAWs through DPP and the resulting JPGs did not look a lot better.

My take away:

• The level of detail you can get from 22/24 MPx pixelcount cameras with a good lens such as the 150-450 versus full K-1 36 MPx costs you about 50% focal length. You need the 600mm on 24 MPx to come closer to 36 Mpx 450mm.
• The 150-450 is on par with the 100-400 II optically.

Sidenote:

• The Sigma's image stabiliser is so bad I still can not judge whether it is damaged on my lens or not (only I had the S version on last Photokina and it exhibited the exact same experience). It's jumping around all the time at 600mm. Not even close to the Canon experience. It has the worst image stabiliser I have ever seen and is the real world example how in lens IS does NOT provide a static viewfinder. The Sigma is is going back.

Yes, the camera lens combos can be read in green (filenames) at the top or bottom of the images.

There's 22Mp + Antialias filter on the 5DIII, sharpness takes a toll even if the 100-400 II is good. DFA150-450 seems to be the sharpest, I guess the lack of OAA filter on the K1 helps.

I guess I should add that the focus distance is 170 meters and I took a couple of shots each and then selected the best ones.
All shots done from a Berlebach Report with two leg segments.

Errr, unless I'm crazy, but the 150-450 shot resolves the bricks way better than the other 3 images?

Any chance you could compare the Canon 150-600 to the 150-450 on a K-3?

Looking at the three images and normalizing the size, you get a better image by far with the K-1 than you do with any canon combination. The lines at the top of the chimney don't lie.

Are you sure there wasn't an issue with autofocus with the Canon ? It looks odd to me that the 100-400 II don't resolve as much as DFA150-450, unless the optical antialias filter on the 5DIII also filter out all the details. From imaging resource comparometer, the K3 deliver images sharper than the 5DIII. You'd possible get the same drop of sharpness from a D750. The advantage of the K1 is that you can crop and still get decent resolution and more "reach'.

No need to wonder, Canon sells camera by crushing all other brands with massing about of marketing and sales.
Canon is what all shops are selling, no matter what the quality is. Canon 5DIII is the highest quality gear of Canon , all the rest is built cheaper.

I have a K-1 with the DFA 150-450 an a D800e with Sigma 150-600 C at home. The K-1/150-450 is sold an waits for shipping. Must I write more?
The Sigma 150-600 is simply "sharp", even wide open and there is no way to get the same details by cropping a 450mm shot.

(Yesterday, I compared my Sigma to the Nikon 200-500 5.6 => same result.)

Ok, I don't shoot roofes at 170 meters of distance with my telezoom, but birds an other animals at 5 to 50 meters. My preferred option would be a Sigma 150-600 with PK mount.
