Newbie SMC Pentax-FA 100-300mm F4.5-5.6 Question

I just bought a used SMC Pentax-FA 100-300mm F4.5-5.6 lens.

Is it normal for things to be out of focus when zoomed all the way in unless you are about 20 yards or closer to what you are focusing on or is there something wrong with this lens?

That's not normal, infinity focus should be possible. The lens will be a bit soft wide-open, but it should be able to focus correctly.

Is there possibly a setting or something I am missing or is it likely just broken?

Assuming you are focusing manually, there are no settings that could change anything.

However, do note that the infinity mark on the lens may or may not correspond to actual infinity, so that could be throwing you off.

Yeah I tried both manual and auto focusing, neither worked.
Luckily I can return the lens hehe.

I appreciate your help, thanks!
