FA* 85 1.4 -- Alternate hoods -- Will the one from 645 FA 120mm F4 Macro fit?

Howdy,

I am looking at alternate 67mm hoods for my FA* 85mm 1.4.

Has anyone here tried a 645 FA 120mm Macro lens hood (PH-RBD67) on a FA* 85mm lens?
They both are 67mm and are bayonet mount, but compatible?

Thanks.

I just use on of those metal ones from ebay.
The advantage being that I just cap over the hood.

I have both lenses, I can give it a try tonight and let you know.

Yep, a very good alternative.

Pentax 6x7 lens hoods PH-SA & PH-SB would work out fairly well too, I believe.
The MH-RA hood for an A*85mm would also fit.

I like lens hoods that have a rubber sleeve on their front edge. That is why I am interested in the PH-RBD67 hood.
I do stand my cameras face down on the lens hoods occasionally as well as bump into things.

Thank you, I really appreciate your time.

I use the MH-RA on my 50-135 with a plastic cap from a food container. I realize that isn't the question at hand, but I can attest to the fact that it works for that. It is bulky however, and it lacks the rubber edge you like.

That one screws into 67mm filter thread, not a bayonet mount.

The Pentax 6x7 lens hoods, PH-SA & PH-SB 67mm, would clip onto the lens filter threads.
They are not bayonet mount either.

Yes I know that well and use it on my 50-135 which is a lens designed for a bayonet hood. I offer this as a potential option to explore.

Now I'm totally confused... the OP start thread says "They both are 67mm and are bayonet mount, but compatible?"

So is the correct hood for a FA* 85mm 1.4 a bayonet or screw on hood?

LOL - I think the MH-RA as another way to go (not bayonet along with some 6x7 one's. The one's he seems most interested in are the 645 bayonet hoods. The MH-RA is a bit of a red herring - sorry. The Actual FA* hood is bayonet from what I understand. The MH-RA hood is for the A* not FA* and has a lovely shape (albeit huge) and it metal and screws in - but was not the original hood used on FA* 85's. I would expect it would work well based on pictures. I also offer that a raisin container lid fits just great and lets you use it without removing it. I also have the leather cover for the hood but that's less easy to use than the plastic lid.

Thanks for that clarification...

Aye, one resides on mine, as you say... it's "big and manly", but then it has to be, to tame my “Sweetheart” and keep her under control.

The FA* hood is a bayonet mount, I have it on mine. It is rather large and adds quite a bit to the size of the lens, including reverse mounted for storage. If there is a good alternative, I'm open to suggestions as well!

OP here
The correct lens hood for a FA* 85mm is a 67mm bayonet mount. I have one in mint condition.
And in the spirit of keeping it that way (they do scratch up easily), I am exploring other lens hoods that are more plentiful and less expensive to use in it's place, to take the eventual abuse of my clumsiness..

I have done the same thing with my FA*80-200 lens hood.
I put the mint original lens hood into storage, and use a 77mm PH-RBK bayonet mount lens hood in it's place.

I assume you cut off a bit to allow it to work fully? I tried that and it would only fit (unmodified) in manual focus mode.

The answer is no, the 645 FA 120 hood is not compatible with the FA* 85.
