Anyone has a decent trick for use of M lens with flash photography?

I use my M lenses with my AF280t flash and it's quite easy. I Put the camera in manual mode and the flash in half-automatic mode, set the aperture to what I think is right for shooting with the flash in those conditions and fire away. I'm not sure though what'd it be like with a newer flash though.

AFAIK the built-in flash always blasts on full for M lenses, so I just click away a few test shots in Manual mode, turning the aperture ring until it looks nice. Cut open fuji film canister makes a good diffuser, a bit of foil in the canister makes it bounce upwards.. Makes for a light travel setup.

with external flash I use 'auto' mode on the flash, and set the camera aperture accordingly.

Grab a 540 and shoot in AUTO (not P-TTL) mode. Match up the ISO/f-stop between the flash and camera. Should work great!

what about the built-in flash?

Anyone has a good tip to spare for the built-in flash to be used with M lens?
the built-in flash is marvelous for very slight fill-in and to put sparkles on things. But it tends to fire at full power when coupled with M lens and won't throttle down correctly like an external flash could.... maybe it's just a limitation of this flash.

Read Mark's post above. It doesn't just "tend" to fire at full power with an M lens, it WILL ALWAYS fire at full power. Only solution is to use a smaller f-stop to limit how much light hits the sensor.

Or tape some TP over the on-board full power flash....
