Zoom or primes?

Hi y'all,

I am sure this has been discussed elsewhere. I am currently selling my APS-C lenses to fund the Pentax 24-70 since I bought the K-1.

I'm interested in your opinion to go with a set of primes instead after getting a used SMC Pentax-FA 50mm F1.7 for a great price which is just beautiful on the K-1.

What's your take and what lenses would you get for the K-1?

DA 35mm f2.4 then find a 20 or 24mm(I use a sigma superwide ll AF 24mm)

For the 70mm, just get a 1.4x TC, your 50 then becomes 70mm and f2.4

Theres a few TCs that are very good and don't cost a lot...sigma(but check their website) and Tamron/Kenko/Vivitar+ ect

The only full frame Pentaxes I have all film cameras but from my 40 plus years shooting the question I would have is why does it have to be one or the other? For my K5IIs I have 15/35/50 and 70 primes and 18-50/20-35 and 70-200 zooms. I got the 2-35 partly fro the film cameras and the 18-50 as I wanted at least one WR lens. If I got rid of my APS-C cameras I would most likely sell my 15 and 18-50 and get a WR zoom and also investigate if I would be better off trading the 70 for a 77 Ltd. There is room for more than one type of lens in a kit. The other formats I shoot are strictly primes as there really is no choice.

Zooms vs Primes, all depends upon what your end use is...

My end use for my image files is to print them up very large. So, I need the very best quality lens - a premium quality prime!

If shooting for social media, or posting on the web, I'd rather use a zoom for it's versatility.

Or, if you are a mountain climber (or another type of photographer where weight is of paramont importance) then I'd go for a lighter weight prime (probably slower too).

If you are a macro photographer, use a prime.

If you are a fast action/sports photographer, use Canon or Nikon.

My take is that fast primes made sense on APSC for additional resolution and iso, but on K1 having the 24-70 that is sharp wide open, I don't see the "need" of any prime. I set the 24-70 @ 50mm and it's as good or better then shooting primes on APSC.

Thanks, that's good to know. The DA35 f/2.4 is one of my favourite lenses on APS-C... nice to hear it can extend its usefulness to full frame

I have both, the 40mm limited and the da 35mm/2.4. One is on the k3ii and the other on my *full frame* Super Program

They're pretty much the same in terms of angle of view/perspective on both cameras, never really noticed a significant difference.

I'm a Prime guy myself on the K-3 but the new D FA 24-70 and the D FA 70-200 are so good on the K-1 I don't see the need for a prime unless you're doing specialty work. I'd still keep my FA 31 though and probably add the FA 77 just for good measure

So you need at least 3 more lenses besides the DFA 24-70. Better start saving now.

It'd be nice to own the DFA line of lenses,all reports are very good....but it certainly depends what you shoot and whether the K1 user can justify that cost.

Plenty of the DA "crop" lenses work on K1,either partially or fully.(in FF mode)....obviously all work in crop mode.
