the fully manual one

the "A" but manual focus

or the fully automatic one (with A setting and auto focus)

?

from personal experience, i own an "A" manual focus AT-X Pro, and a Tokina F4.5 constant 80-200, also "A" and manual focus.

both it seems, have identical structure, above F4 they are... mediocre at best, the AT-X Pro at 2.8-4.0 is... soft, atleast when compared to something like a Pentax FA43

anyway the bottom line is while i dont have any of the other F2.8 telephoto zooms, somehow i have a strong feeling they are going to be better than the Tokina one way or another.

you realize that the difference between 135mm and 200mm is very small

have you looked into the DA*50-135

I have the Tokina ATX Pro 80-200/2.8 autofocus lens and use it with my K10d camera. At f/2.8 this lens is razor sharp from 80mm through to 150mm and softens slightly as 200mm approaches, but once stopped down to f/4 it is a razor. It's gives wonderful colors on quite a few better then Sigma 70-200/2.8

I've tried a 200mm prime for some portrait work, and let me tell you it was a pain in the butt.
Not to mention most likely not very professional looking when I had to shoot from that distance

Although I agree with you on the sporting events.
Personally the only TC I'd get is a 1.4x
I haven't been all that impressed with most pic's taken through stronger.
