Newfoundland is a nature reserve.

For example, somewhere in a box in the house I have a picture of my then 6 year old daughter holding some caribou moss out to a caribou calf which is smelling it out on the tundra taken with a 110 instamatic. Clear as a bell. I need to find that picture again.

That said, I have to admit I "cheated" on these last 2 only and went to the Salmonier Nature Park! (you caught me!) Actually, though I have lived here over 36 years now, it's the very first time I've ever gone to that park. No need to generally, but I figured between the rain and school starting I'd be alone and was.

The owl is missing most of a wing from an electrocution accident involving a collision with a wire and lives in a large open enclosure in the park. The caribou (4 of them) are in a large space there as well. Every other picture I have posted is from the wild.

Here's another 55-300mm RE pic from today's hike. This falls is about 20 meters high and I am taking the pic from the bridge another few meters above that. The brown trout (in the full res pic the red side spots are very obvious) is probably a foot long. This is a 2825x1883 crop from the original 6000x4000 taken @260mm. It is then reduced using the pentaxforum software. Click pic for exif info.

I missed 2 other fish jumps as they didn't go high enough for me to react to the shutter release in time. I caught one other jump but as I had to push fairly hard to react quickly, it is more blurry. Fish were jumping about 1/minute, so that made doing this a bit harder.

Awesome pics, there's nothing there to complain about as far as I can see.
Since for me, and many other hiker/canoeists, the size and weight of the lens in the camera bag, especially for a long lens, is crucial. The collapsing size is part of what makes this lens so attractive.

Be sure and cross post in the 300 plus club.

Yes, I'm debating, K-70 vs K-3II vs wait for the next flagship APS-c body. It's impossible to make a decision when there are two choices.... 3 is just way to much to consider, especially when one of the possibilities is an unknown.

Withe he K-3II vs K-70 it's flippy screen vs. GPS. As always, I want it all.

Yeah, but when you already have a working camera, and all the choices will still be available next month ...
{I'm also delaying, but in my case its because the K-70 seems poised to lead to a K-02, and my K-30 still works this week}

I am extremely happy with my new K-70/55-300mm RE purchase. I have loved my storm trooper K-50 and will keep it as a spare body, but the new combo is clearly better now that I have had a chance to test it. The one thing I haven't yet been able to get to work is pixel shift. Even shooting from a tripod my outside wooden staircase seems to lead to too much motion. That said, the new 55-300mm is clearly optically superior to the older SMC DAL version I have, focuses much faster, doesn't hunt anywhere near as much, and is silent.

Here is a 100% crop (not reduced with pentaxforum software) of the jumping trout I posted above. Note the trout is just jumping into a water blob! I hadn't noticed that on the lesser crop. The red spotting is now easy to see as well even on jpg. The trout is about 25 to 35 meters away (80-110 feet) and is about a foot long or so.

Absolutely. Especially frustrating when (according to Adam, who would know), it could be made to work with a firmware update.

Not to mention a hundred little things on the flagship model. Quiet shutter, robust construction, more buttons, top LCD, much better dust control, faster and quieter AF, more battery power, solid construction, etc etc. When I use the K-30 now, I really notice the absence of those things - although the light weight is handy, and I still marvel at what the K-30 offers as an entry camera. K-70 obviously has a lot of extra features, and the 24mp sensor with no AA-filter, but I still see it as a successor to the K-30/K-50 line. Personally I'd wait for the flippy screen and improved AF from the K-1 to come to the next APS-C flagship; then you can have it all. But hey you weren't asking for an opinion were you Norm? ;-)

@jgnfld, thanks again for sharing these terrific pix.

I tell people what I think, and they tell me what they think.... I like to hear what people think. It's just usually not relevant to me. On rare occasion though... there's at least 2 other shooters on the forum who think like me.

But if someone can say something that will clarify my thinking go for it. Personally I usually think of everything 5 times and still can't come to a decision, but maybe this time I missed something.

The thing I'd really like to not be missing from the next flagship would be the GPS module. Lack of a GPS module for landscape images would be almost enough to tip the scales in favour of a K-1. I have totally stopped using the GPS feature in Aperture to tag my photos, I just can't be bothered loading the files from eh GPS into the computer. And the GPS thing seems to move in and out model to model. It's flash not GPS;s turn next.

So it's quite possible I'm waiting for the next flagship , so I can get the K-3ii at a good price. So many possibilities. As above, my K-3 is more camera than I've ever hoped for. I'm sure I can go another 18 months without something new if nothing becomes clear.

Weird. I was pretty sure he had said that he wasn't sure in a couple of other places but I can't find them right now.

I think they are going to ask why at Photokina...
