Sigma 500mm f4.5 for Pentax???

Hey everyone, gotta question about this lens. Does anyone here actually have one for their Pentax? I am thinking about getting this since it's half the price of an FA600 f4. I've seen lots of mostly positive reviews on fredmiranda.com, but I want to know if anyone actually uses it in the Pentax mount. I'm probably going to use it with my K10D to do birding. My only concern right now is the teleconverter issue will prevent me from using it with SR. Then again, I will be tripod mounting it and I could use it with my DS, so SR might be a moot point. My Sigma 170-500 is great for closer shots, but I want something with more sharpness and speed for longer shots. I considered the 50-500 instead, but it won't allow the faster shutter speeds I seek. Oh, if they'd only come out with the Sigmonster for Pentax...

Have you considered the 100-300 f4? I have been looking at it for a short while now.

To bring the Sigma 100-300 into the focal length neighborhood of the 500 with a 2X teleconvertor (300mm becomes 600mm) would make it too dim for the AF system to work. (f8 IIRC). A 1.4 teleconverter would only drop it one stop to f5.6 with an effective focal length of 450mm which is better but still slower that the 500 f4.5 by half a stop. This is a more "hand-holdable" lens than the 500, but I'm not sure if I like introducing additional optical elements and possibly degrading the image.

some practical info you will find here:
Nature Forum: Sigma 500 f4.5 v/s Nikon 500 f4
and in general about long telephoto lens:
Nature Forum -- Equipment - Telephoto lenses (300mm or more)

Personally I use SMC K500/4.5 which costs me about $700.
on CookiesInstructions you will find similar but screwmount.
