At any business that manufactures something to sell. They develop concepts, solicit investments, then manufacture and market the products.

It takes capital, and most businesses don't have buckets of cash lying about.
Hence partnerships. Do you think that Tokina alone could develop FIVE new prime lenses simultaneously and launch them within a year?

I shouldn't have written that. I only reported facts (including sources), then added some considerations about cost sharing and finally asked a question.

Mistral, can I suggest you retitle the thread with "(Speculation)" at the end.

It's very click-baity at the moment ... certainly disappointed me when I read the OP.

Point taken and thread retitled to avoid any disappointment: this was definitely not an announcement (nor a mere speculation ).

This is even more mislading... The link between Tokina cine lenses and new Pentax DFA is based on past collaboration that for all we know ended a few years ago. All recent rebadge were tamron, that also has modern primes in its portfolio.

For all we know, Pentax could secretly discuss with Canon to buy some of their design. To me this is just a little less likely than what we have there. At least until we see a DFA50mm T 1.5 cine lens with Pentax brand.

As for releasing 5 lenses (over several years as the 25mm is not out) as such common focal length is not really a R&D challenge. many formula are now in the public domain and all manufacturers have past version of such focal lens (24, 35, 50, 85) and most often the difficulty is advanced blazing fast AF and keeping everything small than anything else.

Theses days where almost everybody with an optical degree make their own kickstarter I don't think we should think the design of huge classical prime a task of major difficulty or requiring lot of money.

Why the bashing Mistral75? I think it's a good post and an interesting theory. I wasn't expecting anything, so I wasn't disappointed.

IMHO there will be three DFA* primes (24/2, 85/1.4, ?) and three nice DFA enthusiast primes, (two of which could be updates of the FA35/2 and FA50/1.4 in DFA garb, plus 28/2.8) over the next 12-18 months. Those three FL's are awfully coincidental

These Tokina Cine primes are different designs from Pentax and also from the Tokina 50mm 1.4 Opera which is the design of the Pentax D FA* 50/1.4. Being manual focus and much more expensive they are clearly aimed at the professional market. Tokina doesn't need to sell many to make a profit. Design is easier because no lens motors or electronics are involved. All automation is handled by external gearing.

Informative post. I did not know cinema lenses were cheaper to produce.

Clarifying for those who didn't know: The Tokina Opera design was licensed from Pentax who created it so they could produce it for other mounts. On other sites they have sometimes been confused and claim Tokina developed it for Pentax, so just a Tokina knockoff.

I didn't say that. They are probably assembled by hand to very tight tolerances. Not cheap. Design is easier in the sense that no compromises have to be made to enable a fast AF motor incorporated in the lens. Also the wide bodies allow for more room to house the lens elements.

My sincere apologies for initially reading too quickly. Thanks for pointing that out.
