Pentax 1.4x DA-HD Extender

I bought one 'New' from Japan through Ebay. It looks new. Mechanically and electronically, it works perfectly.

But the image quality is terrible, especially near the edges. Atrocious with the 50/1.8DA. Really bad with the 70/2.4 DA. Ok but not great with the 100/2.8M D-FA. Good with the 200/2.8 FA*.
Is it 'normal' or do I have a 'lemon' ?

That doesn't sound right at all. Do you have a couple of images you could post from the 50/1.8 and 70/2.4? I primarily use mine with the DA*60-250, and I find it works well at all focal lengths. I've also tried it with the DFA100 and was very happy with the results. There is a *slight* reduction in IQ, for sure, but very minor indeed...

What camera are you using it with? With the K1, yep, that's normal since it doesn't cover FF, with any of the APSC cameras you should have good edge to edge quality.

Hi Belgarchi. I see from your profile that the 2 cameras you list are the Kx and the K10D. The converter will not work properly on the K10D because there is no firmware update to " marry " the converter to it. As far as the Kx goes, check your firmware status and see if you have the latest version. Good luck.

Thanks Mike. In the good old days ( film ) any attachment put on the camera would work because they were all manual. These days because of the technology, unless they can " talk " to each other electronically, they just won't work properly, if at all.

I would think the SR would be set incorrectly, but that would be the only real issue unless the person is using in camera jpg lens corrections. Trying a shot or Two without sr on might be helpful.

Test with Pentax 1.4x DA-HD

I have problems to upload the photos, not enough space.....

I took a brick wall with the extender 1.4x +
1. Pentax DA 50/1.8 at 1.8
2. Pentax DA 50/1.8 at 2.8
3. Pentax D-FA 100/2.8M at 2.8
4. Pentax D-FA 100/2.8M at 4.0
5. Pentax FA* 200/2.8 at 2.8
The results are:
1. Everything is blurry, especially the edges
2. The center area is sharp, the edges blurry. Huge improvement.
3. Except for the corners, everything is sharp
4. Like 3, very slightly better (the corners are still not perfect)
5. Like 3, center very slightly less good, corners very slightly better
In a nutshell, not usable with the 50/1.8 (except maybe at 4.0 or more?), good but not great with the 100/2.8M and the 200/2.8.
