Wide angle Lens

Hello everyone, So I had asked a few months ago about recommendations to lenses for someone who shoots portrait and landscape. Graduation/prom season is over at the moment so my portraits are a bit on the slow side. So for now im focusing on the landscape side. For now, I will be buying the k3ii body this weekend, hopefully on here and own the sigma 17-50mm f2.8. However if i wanted to go wider what is a spot on lens you guys recommend me to pick up for landscape? been keeping my eyes on the pentax 14mm f2.8 but I'd like more input on this. Thanks

Samyang 14mm f/2.8 if you don't mind manual focus. Maybe a 20mm, or the sigma 8-16mm

You may find that the DA14 is not nearly as highly regarded as the DA15. I have the DA12-24 and would not recommened it to my worst enemy (if I had an enemy...).

would prefer autofocus. ive used rokinon in the past but i like having the autofocus system going

ah so stay away from 12-24... and the DA15 is a better pick in this case

The DA 12-24mm is fairly well regarded by most. Why would you not recommend it? I know it has considerable CA issues, but if shot RAW, lens correction utilities in PP will handle it well.

Note the customer reviews from B&H:

Other zooms the OP may want to consider:

The DA15 is not a perfect lens. It is better than that. It has foibles and failings that somehow do not detract from its charm. I wouldn't be without it on APS-C.

DA15mm Ltd.
A few years ago, I considered both the DA14mm f2.8 and DA15mm. I went with the DA15mm, partly because of its reputation, mostly because the lens is small. With a wide angle lens, a large aperture is not that important IMHO. The DA15 mm is a great lens and its pancake design makes it a nibble. The metallic construction is very sturdy and the IQ is outstanding. In my case, the DA15mm met all my needs and more. No regret. And it works very well on my K3.
Hope that the comment may help.

Sigma 10-20 and Tamron 10-24 are easily found used for a good price and easy to sell off if you dont like it. They are quite good but not as the suggested primes. If you go for this cheap choice you can test two things: If the quality is good enough for you, and what focal length you prefer. Or maybe you find out that you need a zoom in stead of a prime.

DA 12-24mm, DA 14mm: absolutely decent lenses, but not super popular. Nothing wrong with them. Maybe their price on release was a bit too high, so people did not get as enthusiastic. These are not bad lenses
DA 15mm limited (SMC, HD versions): This one is a special UWA. It is super compact, and has a lot of character. Not for everyone, but it does have a cult following.
Samyang 10mm, 14mm, 16mm, 24mm: All of these are great UWA lenses, with full auto-aperture and CiF support, but they are manual focus only. Really sharp, overall great, but might have problems with QC (some users had to return their copy to get a sharp one). Very affordable, but big heavy lenses. For a beginner on ASPC I would recommend 16mm f2. The 14mm and 24mm are FF lenses, so if you want to use it on film cameras or FF camera, then you might want these. I have 14mm, but it is very wide, not suitable for every landscape.
Affordable zooms: Sigma 10-20mm (two versions), Tamron 10-24mm. I have seen really good photos taken by either of these lenses, though they are not necessarily "stunning." Decent price, decent optics, comfortable zoom range, something good to build skill with, but not really something to write home to mammy about.

My recommendation: If you don't mind Manual focus (and its really not a big problem with UWA lenses, DoF is huge), get the Samyang 16mm. If you want AF, look at used DA 15mm and DA 14mm locally. If these don't show up, work your way down the list. Keep in mind that at the wide angle side, every mm is a difference. 202mm vs. 200mm is not really anything you can notice, but 13mm vs 15mm is noticeable. I have Samyang 14mm, but I bought it back when there was far less choice

go wider
DA15 is very cool, but not that significantly wider than what you've got.
DA12-24 is really wider, but the DA12-24 + sigma 17-50 is not such an ideal combo since they overlap with each other in the range of view angle, and they are both heavy and bulky.
DA10-17 is the best choice in my opinion, it is wider, lighter and cheaper than DA12-24. If you dont mind the fish-eye effect and can handle fringing in software, choose it.

The DA 14 is so much better than the DA 15. Not even close. There was a user on the forums that compared both the DA 14 and DA 15 at F4. The DA 14 was appreciably sharper and from corner to corner than the DA 15. It's a 2.8 F lens. How can it not be sharper?

Here's a thread I started on the DA 14. https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/10-pentax-slr-lens-discussion/320703-impressed-da-14-a.html

I love both my DA 15 and my DA 12-24. The DA 15 has far superior flare resistance and is far more compact. The Da 12-24 is quite a bit wider and is quite versatile.

I have a friend who swears by the DA 10-17. While it is a fisheye it isn't too fishy on the 17mm end and can be corrected somewhat in software. It is also light and small compared to the DA 12-24. I have no direct experience with it however.

Nothing comes over a DA15Ltd on crop

when you really used it - you love it
The only crop lens, I am hesitating to sell now that I have the K-1

Pixel peeping aside. It has great color rendering, it is compact (so you will have it with you) and (the non HD version) makes wonderful stars.
