SMC-A Lens Problem?

I just noticed a SMC-A 50mm f1.7 lens on e-bay and it was noted in the description that the lens would only stop down to about f8 and won't go any further. I have the same lens and while it will stop down all the way, it sometimes takes 2 or 3 tries to get it past f8. Has anyone else encountered this?

While the optical engineers at Pentax were creating what I consider to be their sharpest ever 50, the mechanical engineers must have had some holiday time due because the build quality of the A50/1.7 is dreadful.

Your problem is likely to be with the leaf springs that work the A setting button, they are held in place only by pressed plastic welds which often fails and the spring then jams the aperture ring, sometimes completely, sometimes not.

The fact that the aperture ring is made from plastic can also be the culprit and can become rough and tight with age.

If it is that the springs are loose then they can be re-attached with glue or similar and all should work well again.

I have fixed these before and it's fairly straight forward but if you are using it on a DSLR and can put up with it being in "A" all the time then I would leave it there and not use the aperture ring as the mount on A series lenses is a bit of a stupid design with lots of small parts.

I leave it on A and it's on my wife's Super Program. That gives her a nice film camera that she can use, other than focus, as a P&S.

As I said, I would leave it on the A setting but if you do fancy giving it a go, here is a good page I googled that shows you most of what you need to know.
