surely I must be wrong

I apologize if this is the wrong place for this.

While hiking yesterday I didn't see a tree root and the K-5 and I smashed to the ground. I have quite a dramatic bruise on my knee, and the lens hood of the 16-85 was destroyed--however, the lens & camera seem to be fine and I took dozens of photos after this happened (right at the beginning, wouldn't you just know it?). Today I went online to seek a replacement hood. I can't seem to find one anywhere. I can find off-brand, but I wanted to at least compare what a Pentax hood would cost. Am I just going about the search wrong? Anyone who could point me toward this hood would be much appreciated--it certainly did its secondary job, dying to protect the lens.

And if that is too much, maybe get a screw-in one, at least until a generic 72mm bayonet hood becomes available.

Could have been a lot worse Ruby, for both you and the camea/lens. I dropped a lens once when walking in the French Alps, and it was never the same again.

B&H have the Pentax PH-RBA 72mm lens hood listed for $25, which is not too expensive. But it is out of stock ...

That's a good option--I'll probably take it easy for a while, make sure the knee is sound again.

The hood did a nice job as an air bag for the lens, hope the knee's good in a couple of days.

My camera and 16-85 lens took a fall too. The lens broke in 2
I am still unsure of whether it can be fixed, but if it can't and you're still looking I'll happily pass the hood on to you.

Not sure if this is the correct hood, but KEH has a PH-RBA72 hood for $4.00 - says it's for the 28-200...

Thank you! Next time you're in the area, LBL has some really nice hiking. Hematite Lake is relatively easy--I had four teenaged girls of varying fitness levels with me. I manage to scamper around in the Bighorns and fall over on flat ground.

Oh no! I hope they can fix it! I appreciate the offer.

The bruise still looks dramatic, but the swelling has gone down. I tried to attach a picture of it, but I usually somehow flub that if I'm trying to post directly from my computer. (Okay, I signed on in a different browser and I think I got it.)

When my wife and I were hiking in the Appalachian Mountains on our honeymoon, her foot found almost every tree root on the trails. After one particularly close call, I started walking on the other side of her so that if she fell, she would fall onto the trail and not off the side of the mountain. Would have been a bummer to lose my new wife.

Ya, I hate it when that happens.
