Pentax DFA 24-70 On It's Way

After going back and forth on a standard zoom, I broke down and settled on the 24-70 - Got it Used rated as a 9+ from B&H for $1099.95 US. What are your thoughts on the lens and the price? This should be all I Need on my trip to New Orleans in a couple of weeks. I'm going to leave my FA50, DA 55, DFA 77, DFA 100 and the Tamron 70-200 at home and try to do it all with the 24-70. Thoughts

I'd bring the 70-200 along too. I find that my 24-70 (mine is the Sigma EX HSM version), Tamron 70-200, and K1 all fit in my small camera bag perfectly.

If the camera you are using is the K-1, it will cover your wide angle needs and a good portion of your medium short range, if you are using it on an aps-c camera you may be lacking on the short end for wideness. I use a 16-85 on my K-5IIS, which has wide end capability similar to what the 24-70 has on a K-1, and it is great. If you know you will not need telephoto capability, the 24-70 is going to cover a lot on a K-1, and the image quality should prove to be excellent. If you need some telephoto, it is up to you how much reach you will need and what other lens might be useful in that category.

It's a really nice lens. If it was me, I would probably throw your DFA 100 in as well, just in case you want something a little longer, but 24-70 covers most of the focal lengths I use regularly and I think I could vacation with it and never really want anything else (although I still bring all of the primes along anyway)...

I've been very pleased with my 24-70. I value sharpness more than other attributes and I've been impressed by this lens. I think the borders and corners are reasonably sharp also. My K-1 and 24-70 are definitely heavier than other pairs I've used, but it's worth the weight. I normally travel with the 24-70, my Pentax 60-250 and my Sigma 8-16, which basically serves as a 15-16 on the K-1 due to vignetting. But the vast majority of shots are with the 24-70. If you are shooting in an urban setting you may not need anything other than the 24-70. It all depends on what you shoot. Have a good trip!

K-1 and 24-70 is probably the best combination for results on your trip. The wideness at the 24 end will enable you to get nice inclusion in your shots, plus the extra range up to 70 will come in really handy for situations requiring getting somewhat closer. The image quality (detail/resolution/color) should be fantastic with the K-1. Have a wonderful time!

I went to Europe this summer with a K-1 24-70,15-30 & Sigma 70-300. I would guess that 95% of my photos were with the 24-70. It is excellent around town and the quality is hard to beat.

It is better to have it and not need it that to need it and not have it. I would at a minimum include the 70-200 zoom for the occasional distance shot and the 100 for closeups and macros.

Hey mate
just wondering if you've done any cityscapes and encountered smeared halos/blobs around light sources?
I have this lens and am facing this issue.

The 24-70 lens is my most used lens in my Pentax set and other brand's setup. The Pentax 24-70 It's a good lens, builts welll, AF fast, very convenient and covers most of shooting range that you would need. That's I have used different 24-70s or 24-70 equivalent lenses from various different brands including Canon, Nikon, Sony and Olympus; the Pentax 24-70 matches them well in sharpness and the AF is only slightly slower, most of the time it's negligible and doesn't affect any means when putting it into its paces. The bokeh of this lens isn't the best but it's still very decent and matches other brand's 24-70 well in this regard. No complaints for me.

I have just ordered a new 24-70 from SRS Camera for 800 GBP (a bit more than 1000$). It was a Black Friday offer, I think that was a good price, especially considering the prices in Europe. Now I'm waiting for the lens.
